There was one season when Dan devine coached Mizzou and they were, say 7-3 and the team voted they were not worthy and did not accept a bowl bid somewhere. Unspeakable today.

Due to conference tie-ins, declining a bowl bid isn't even an option for most teams anymore. I think the only way a school can do it now is if they're a fill-in selection for another conference, or if they're one of the 4 independents. Even then, Army, Navy and BYU have taken to signing contracts with one bowl each year to take them if they're eligible.

IIRC, La Tech or University of Louisiana-Monroe did it a couple years ago to avoid playing the other one. I think it was La Tech after they had a pretty good year and their coach had left. ULM had already accepted an invite to play in a bowl (possibly in Shreveport) and La Tech declined their invite. Speculation was that they wanted a better bowl, but there was also speculation that they didn't want to play ULM (especially since LATech's coach was gone). Then, La Tech never got another invite that year and didn't play in a bowl game. So.....rumor/conspiracy/etc filled, but I can think of one example where a team declined to play in a bowl.

But, in general, you're correct and I agree.

Yeah, La Tech was an at-large pick for that bowl and held out for a better offer that never came. However, if Michigan for instance gets picked through a B1G tie-in for the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, they can't decline it.

The only other recent instance where a team declined a bowl bid was when ND fired Charlie Weis and Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate both declared for the draft in the same week, the school then announced they wouldn't play in a bowl. I think that was before any invitation was made though.

In 2004, both South Carolina and Clemson finished 6-5, but both declined a bowl game after their rivalry game, and Lou Holtz's coaching career, ended in an ugly brawl.
