Re: Coronavirus
Here's an update:
My nearly 100 year-old grandmother contracted it about 1.5 months ago. Never had symptoms (which lead some in the family to believe it was a false positive). She is fine now.
My nearly 95 year-old grandmother contracted it about a month ago. Had runny nose and fever for symptoms. She suffers from dementia, so we don't know if she lost her sense of taste and/or smell, because she doesn't talk much any more. It seems she has recovered, though she isn't eating nearly as much as she used to, so I wonder if the taste/smell thing was there the whole time and is still there.
As for something new and worse, I have a friend who contracted it about 1.5 weeks ago. His kidneys have nearly shut down. He's in the hospital, undergoing emergency dialysis and has been placed on a transplant list. Things aren't looking so good for him. Prior to all this, I would have pegged him as a pretty healthy guy who has remained active into his 50s and is a former collegiate basketball player (in a major conference. I played against him about 5-7 years ago, which would have put him in his late 40s, and he was still very good.)

Re: Coronavirus
Yikes. Scary about your buddy. I hope he pulls through! It's so bizarre how this seems to barely affect some and just devastates others. Unreal.

Re: Coronavirus
I wish everyone the best, too. I really hope your friend pulls through, mikechamp.
The coronavirus is now sweeping through my mother's nursing home, and multiple patients and staff have been diagnosed with it. Because my mother was exposed, she has just been placed in quarantine (for the third time), and I'm going to call to check on her now.

Re: Coronavirus
My half-aunt and her husband in their mid-80s still have some symptoms but they are hanging in there. The husband had some scares about a week ago when he was not breathing well, but he has improved since then.

Re: Coronavirus
I guess my friend has been deemed newsworthy, because KMOV chose to run something on him. According to the article, it seems he is doing slightly better, though not out of the woods yet:

Re: Coronavirus
Hope everybody is doing well and those that were infected are getting better.
Ther World Health Organization has released data from a large prospective study about various treatments.
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101 ... 1.full.pdf
The headlines are remdesivir doesn't work. Which is true to a degree. They also looked at inteferons, hcq, and lopinivar. And, none of them reduced mortality in the trial. It should be noted, these treatments were all given to hospitalized patients. And, while I'm not sure about inteferons mechanism, the other treatments are all antiviral medications. So...it should be no surprise that antivirals don't work when given a week or more after infection. Antivirals, from my understanding, only work early in the infection (like tamiflu has to be given within a day or two of infection to fight off the flu).
So, the study more/less shows antivirals don't work when administered to hospitalized patients. Which is something that I think most people already knew that are paying attention.
