I can forgive not signing a single player if the plan really is a rebuild. But that would involve trading veterans for prospects to create a young base to build on in a year or two. We haven't done that either.

It's just more classic late Mo/Dewitt era muddling. Never going for it, but never restocking either.

I agree with this. Keeping Helsley seems insane to me.

They're not letting the young pitchers play. They're blocked by a bunch of mediocre old guys. They're trading Arenado because he's unhappy. He's unhappy because the organization lied to him and wasted some of his career.

The kids aren't throwing 200 innings, so we need Mikolas and Matz to contribute early on. I think it makes sense holding them and then flipping at the deadline.

McGreevy and Mathews aren't exactly young...

mcgreevy will be 25 in a few months, and he's been throwing around 150IP a few years now. he should be given every 5th start to see if he can be a back of the rotation guy

Mathews will also be 25 this year; hasn't had the IP like mcgreevy, since he was drafted later, but obv much higher upside. needs to start in AAA and be the first guy brought up

Hence, I have no faith in...all the talent in the world but always seems to have something nagging him injury-wise. could be an ace, or could be another Alex Reyes...I really don't know or care much

roby always is hurt also....don't really have faith or care about him either

seems pointless to complain about not signing anyone. who were they gonna sign? outside of guys like soto and burnes, there's no one worth throwing money at. sign a guy and then trade him for prospects? no thanks...mo is completely incapable of that line of thinking. he's already done enough damage to this franchise...no need to prolong that.

what i will say though, when this season is done and over with, we will be posting about how completely braindead it was to not capitalize on helsey when we had the chance.

Either there really is no realistic market for him (seems unlikely?) or ownership thinks he's gonna put butts in seats and win at least a passable "competitive number of games this year. I can't say it makes sense, but that seems to be the thought process.

I absolutely believe it's your second option; Mo really believes is helsley stays on and saves more games than an alt closer might....we may have a ok/respectable number of wins, and thinks that will bring fans to the ballpark

I get the "let the young guys play" approach in general, but good God. Not a single MLB FA? CF will be the same [expletive] show it was last year with zero insurance? Kyle Leahy is our best RHP in the bullpen besides Helsley? Yikes.

To the point above, why not sign a veteran RHP for the bullpen so they can either:

1. Have him step in when Helsley is traded
or
2. Flip at the deadline if he's doing well

My gut tells me, without looking up his stats, that Kenley Jansen would be a decent, low risk, low budget, one year signing. That won't mess with the Bloom-ing Onion leadership transition plan, and it would provide some veteran leadership in the bullpen.

the 2026 class is also really terrible. two guys even worth considering, bichette an vladdy jr, under the age of 30. this is out of like 50 FAs.

i would like to see the cards throw some coin at vladdy and i think theyd have a realistic shot at signing him.
