I'm a little superstitious, so I have not said anything, but my 80 year old father went through hell this past winter and spring dealing with throat cancer. I can't believe he survived the treatments(radiation and some chemo-like thing, although they could give him real chemo because of his age/condition), they were just brutal. He ate through a tube in his stomach for months.

It's amazing though. He is back, he has energy (he is 80), he works on the farm regularly now. Just incredible he bounced back. Honestly if it weren't for the voice you wouldn't know he went through this. Monthly checkups have been good, cancer free so far.

So glad to hear about your dad, jim! That does sound brutal!

And wrox, if she's not staged yet, how do they know it will be a year of treatment? Wishing her a shorter and successful treatment and most of all a full recovery!

The results from _____'s pathology testing showed that the nasal polyp tissue was malignant. She has Rhabdomyosarcoma, embryonal type. Of the two types that she could have, she has the type that is more easily treated. This cancer responds well to surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. This cancer is most commonly seen in children her age and there is an established protocol for treatment. Right now we don't know a lot of things. We don't know the stage of cancer. We don't know the prognosis. We don't know if it has spread. But I do know that the doctors are very optimistic. Over this next week, ______ will be undergoing several tests. These tests will help us better understand her current situation and develop a treatment plan. She'll be having a CT, MRI, spinal tap and have a bone marrow sample taken. The results from these tests, and any other test she has done, should be received in about 2 weeks. The week after that treatment will start. What I do know about her treatment so far is that it will last up to a year. The first 12 weeks will be chemotherapy. The next 12 weeks will be radiation therapy. She will then have additional chemotherapy treatments that will last up to 6 months. She will go in for these treatments once every 3 weeks. While there are still a lot of unknowns, the doctors are confident that she is going to be able to lead a pretty normal life during this time.
