Edmonds heading to San Diego

I cant believe there are Cardinal fans upset about this. What did you expect for a 37 yr CF whos body has taken a beating over his career, and his numbers are on a obvious decline? If I was a Cardinal fan Id be happy to not have to pay the whole 8 million left on his contract now.

Basically. People here are being pretty naive about Edmonds value. I'm just glad we got a player with any kind of upside what so ever.

I for one am not naive enough to think that Edmonds had much value at all on the open market. But he did have more value than that to me as a fan than to unceremoniously dump him for a guy that in all likelihood won't sniff the major leagues. Almost every Cardinal fan that I know would rather see Jimmy patrolling CF for one last year and finish it out in a Cardinal uni than to see this happen (even if he is a shell of his former self....but who's to say he doesn't have a good year ahead of him?). If you believe what management has been saying, the money is there to make phantom signings if they come along. What does saving $8 million for one year do? Do you honestly think that money is going to get spent? At this point of the offseason there aren't many (if any) options out there to commit that money to anyway. This year is already looking pretty bleak and they just took away one of the few things to look forward to and one of the few reasons to spend money to see this team play. If the plan was to save money all along then why lie about it? Why even pick up Izzy's option? How many games is he going to be needed in with this roster?

I wouldn't rule out him making it to the majors. Based off what someone posted earlier, he's probably gonna start next season in Triple A. He's not a typical single A player. I don't think he's gonna be much of a player, though.

And I was a fan of Edmonds, but it's time to part ways with him and Scott Rolen, imo. He is old, isn't productive and making too much money.

The 8 million could be used to pay for a pitcher/player that could help us beyond 2008.

And I would not be surprised of Izzy was traded by All-star break to a contending team.

Mixed feelings about this. I wanted to see Edmonds retire as a Cardinal in 2008 (but not in 2009, 2010, or whatever).

But I am very ready for a new era to begin, even if it means rebuiding and stinking for a year or two. It is time to start cutting unproductive ties with past glories, regardless of how painful it is. Hopefully Moz has someone young and productive in mind for redeploying the payroll to. I have no idea whom that could be. Maybe Blanton?

I'll remember Edmonds for his 2004 season, when he was at his best.

I look forward to seeing Rasmus and Ankiel patrolling the outfield. Loved the young, youthful, 'give it all you've got' Jim Edmonds, not the recent, ageing version.

I think the trade hastens us along the road to recovery by allowing young prospects to gain experience.

Losing benefit of the doubt = management wont care

Now, start losing ticket sales, and now management will start caring.

Btw, I'm not saying that management doesn't care about the team, I really think they do, and are trying to build for the future. I'm just saying, generally speaking, you can't expect owners to care too much about "fans being displeased" with a product, when they are still putting money in the owners pockets. Obviously, they aren't too upset by it.

I never said management cared. I just said we've reached the point where we can't expect them to do anything significant just because they've supposedly created "payroll flexibility."
