Here is the bullpen usage since the Cubs series (name/IP/pitches)

Fri:
Reyes 0.1/2
KMac 0/8
Motte 1/12
Salas 1/14

Sat
Boggs 1.1/22
Hawk 1/19

Sun
Motte 1/18
KMac 1/11

Mon
Hawk 1/11
Miller 1/16
Boggs 1/13

So here we are at Tuesday, and obviously I don't know who has an elbow barking or who just needs an extra day off, but I would think Tuesday that with Carp going on Wed and an off day Thursday that virtually everyone would be available. Why would KMac be emergency only? Since Saturday he threw 11 pitches. Why would Motte not be available? He had an easy inning Sunday and Monday off.

I know I don't have all the info, but it sure doesn't look like you needed to go with Franklin for 2 innings. I personally would have used Franklin 1 inning no matter what on Tuesday because of the rust factor, but I don't see why either Motte or KMac couldn't have pitched the 8th.

LaRussa decided overnight that he was more interested in FIP than established roles, recognizing that Franklin is his 4th best reliever.

lol ... first DH game Tony manages and he loses the DH. AL managers will lose the DH maybe 1-2 times per year for some tactical reason.

Puttin' his signature on the game.

Actually it isn't a crazy move - Rasmus to CF in place of Winn in a game where you are winning and getting Rasmus in place of Stavy vs. a RHP which worked out pretty well.

I just think it's funny still.

edit... omg. He takes Luddy out and slides Winn over to RF. I thought he had his best defensive OF out there .. Holl/Raz/Luddy which would make some sense.

Losing the DH is something I've done myself as manager; it happened in a game I managed in Guam in 1996. The umpires tried to stop me from doing it - it was that kind of a league - but I assured them I knew what I was doing.

The best part is when my pitcher had to bat for himself, he hit one off the left-field wall for a two-run double. The other manager was so mad he literally left the bench and went home, and we were still in the 7th inning.

I understand losing the DH - I even wrote about it here a while back and gave an example where I did it in a baseball sim. But I don't get the advantage that he got tonight by it, and it's just hilarious that it happens maybe a time or two per season for AL managers and yet he managed to find a way to do it in his very first DH game of the year.

If he would have kept Luddy in the game I would have understood a little more.

Well, he did say he wanted to get Luddy off his feet a little bit during these six AL-park games; maybe Luddy is having some minor foot or leg issues?

If a righthander is pitching tomorrow for Toronto, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ludwick at DH, with Colby in CF and Winn in RF.

Not only did he not gain any apparent advantage, the move really could've backfired if the Jays had tied it up. The pitcher's spot was behind Pujols, and we all know how that worked out in the 20 inning game vs. the Mets.

Losing the DH unnecessarily is ridiculous. Putting his signature on the game is exactly the way to phrase it. It's borderline embarrassing.

The sooner he retires the better.
