I don't think Holliday is worth giving up Wallace if you look at it in that vacuum.

I think giving up Wallace might be worth Holliday for half a year plus the 2 picks, though. As odd as it sounds, it might help improve organizational depth a little bit, depending on who else is included with Wallace in the deal. If we can grab two legit 1st round types in next year's draft essentially in exchange for Wallace (which is what the deal will be after Holliday leaves in the offseason) then I don't think you're coming out bad at all.

I would worry, though, that they would acquire Holliday and then sign him to a bad contract, thus negating the picks. In that case I wouldn't be in favor of the deal unless the Holliday contract is a bargain.
I agree. The extention isn't a big deal to me unless it's a bad deal. We can say that Holliday isn't worth Wallace, but from Beane's perspective, I'd have no reason to trade Holliday for anything less because I know I can get the guy I want with the 1st round pick and then get another pretty good prospect with the 2nd pick. Picks definitely hold good value.

It's not unreasonable to think that a signed (with bonus paid)and top rated prospect who is performing up to expectations- or at least whose projected ceiling hasn't dropped- might be worth a supplemental and a likely high second round pick to someone like Beane.

"The St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics have been talking about a possible swap of All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday and top prospect Brett Wallace, according to sources, and one person familiar with the talks places the odds of a deal at 50-50."

Rasmus, Pujols, Holliday, Ludwick, Derosa...

That's a pretty solid core.

I'm on the fence. I could be convinced to be in favor of a Holliday/Wallace trade or opposed to it.

The compensation draft picks would make it worth it for me, but really I don't see a viable outfield replacement in our system unless we're ok with Daryl Jones and... somebody else to go with Rasmus in 2010

The comp. picks plus sending a message to Albert probably leans me to favor a deal like that.

Are you saying that Wallace would ultimately be a viable outfield replacement, or am I misunderstanding you?

Are the compensation picks worth it, though? Like I wrote earlier

I would not want to give much more than just Wallace.

No he's saying that he'd rather get Holliday and just let him walk and keep the picks, but if that happens then next year we're back to having no left fielder unless we'd be ok with Jones.

I'm saying it might be worth it to extend Holliday after getting him to a reasonable deal.
