Well I don't understand why your pissed off. It's like your mad because we succeeded despite the trade. The trade worked. heyzeus even showed the WAR difference if you are inclined toward that. For me, it was more important that we got rid of the circus. After all of that boy's [expletive] (constantly asking for trades and having his father in the stadium like he owned the place), I'm surprised the team got a bag of used batting practice balls for him.

After everyone in baseball laughed about the return, I'm surprised the team got, well, basically about a bag of used batting practice balls for him.

I acknowledged that the team was better last year after the trade. It's just that the improvement was about as minimal as possible.

And the WAR breakdown on the previous page doesn't change my mind. Rasmus having an awful close to the season sways me about as much as the old argument that we should give Mozeliak extra credit for Rzepczynski and Dotel because they were replacing players way below replacement-level that he had signed.

I think *one* mystery GM was quoted that he was surprised by the return. I fully believe Rasmus was shopped around, and *all* the bids were low.

Obviously, ol' CP has never heard the old adage, "Addition by subtraction". We were a better team after we got rid of Rasmus; the fact that we got some reasonably useful players for him was gravy. The fact that even the more marginal guys we got (like Dotel) had a solid postseason made it even better.

OK, going down those quotes...

"Pretty lousy for a guy with his upside and years of control," one rival exec said.

3 years of control. Already up for arbitration for '12 (getting $2.7MM this season). Clock ticking to get cheap return on that upside if it doesn't come around soon.

Offered another, "The only rationale could be that they know something about Rasmus that no one else does."

Clearly this guy hadn't been introduced to Tony Rasmus.

In the view of some, Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos nearly topped his trade of outfielder Vernon Wells to the Angels with this one.

Well there are some pretty dumb GM's out there, so this does make some sense.

"The only thing I am sure of is that Alex Anthopoulos is the smartest dude in the game — unreal trade for him," one exec said.

I'm guessing this one exec was Tony Reagins.

Rasmus' value may be down, but one exec says his ability is so tantalizing, the Cardinals could have made him the centerpiece of a package for Rockies right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez.

I'm glad that Mo is smarter than this one exec, since in hindsight even Rasmus for Jimenez stright-up would have only been even because of how awful each has been since being dealt, except that Jimenez has cost much more.


But regardless, that's still just a couple random quotes from as many as maybe 5 "execs". Who knows if they are GM's, who knows how many people Rosenthal was even able to talk to considering that was submitted for publishing mere hours after Rasmus was dealt, at the busiest time of the season for baseball executives.
