Red Sox prospect right-hander Noah Song had his request to continue playing professional baseball denied by the Navy.

It's important to note that Alex Speier of the Boston Globe said the process is still ongoing, subject to review by the Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of Defense. The 22-year-old Song was selected in the fourth round this past summer and went on to post a 1.06 ERA with 19 strikeouts and five walks over his first 17 professional innings with Low-A Lowell. He's quickly emerged as one of Boston's better prospects. There appeared to be some room for optimism due to recent rule changes, but the question is whether he'll essentially be grandfathered into the new system, clearing the way for him to pitch. The current plan calls for Song to report flight school in late January, which allows him to apply for another waiver in two years. Stay tuned.

Red Sox and OF Mookie Betts avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $27 million contract.

It's a record for an arbitration-eligible player, breaking Nolan Arenado's previous mark of $26 million. As you might have heard, Betts is slated to hit the free agent market next offseason and the Red Sox are considering trade offers for him since they apparently don't feel they'll be able to extend him.
