I looked him up on B-R over the past few minutes.

He was in our system for three seasons, 1971-73, from ages 18-20, playing with the GCL Cards and Orangeburg (not Gastonia) in the Western Carolina League. 202 games total. He also played in 1974 in the Reds' system.

In his 3 years in the Cards' system, he played with a handful of guys who eventually made it to the major leagues: pitchers Angel Torres, Dan Larson, and Cardell Camper, and position players Larry Herndon, Jerry Mumphrey, Mike Vail, and Tito Landrum.

Landrum was the only member of the 1973 Orangeburg team to make it to the majors, out of about 40-50 guys that played for them that year. This points out, I think, just how hard it is to make it to the major leagues.

FWIW, Poffo missed playing with Scott Boras by just one season - Boras played for the Cards' Western Carolina League team in 1974, the year after Poffo left the Cards.
