The new ownership here is bringing in a secretary, salesperson, and memorialist to replace me. I find that funny. No wonder everyone says this place will be out of business in a year after I'm gone.

Why the U.S. economy is stronger than you think

I guess it does help to have some perspective, but probably doesn't make those hurting in this economy feel any better.

Check this out. Watch the bottom left of the GIF for the date. It shows how the volume of quoting has skyrocketed with the use of trading robots in recent years. It is from this article:

Long-term unemployment has long-term consequences. We can't make as much stuff when we have fewer people making stuff -- and fewer people making stuff is what will happen if people become unemployable. It's what economists call hysteresis, and it's why stimulus might pay for itself now.

Just don't expect to hear any politicians talk about this. Stimulus has become a four-letter word, and theoretical problems are easier to solve than actual ones. So let's talk about their gaffes.

Charlie Munger, on investing in gold:
I don't have the slightest interest in gold. I like understanding what works and what doesn't in human systems. To me that's not optional; that's a moral obligation. If you're capable of understanding the world, you have a moral obligation to become rational. And I don't see how you become rational hoarding gold. Even if it works, you're a jerk.

So Bernanke makes it clear he's ready to do something because of the anemic job market. Well what can the Fed do to help employment directly? If you want to help employment, I think its a Congressional thing - change the corporate tax code to give companies an incentive to hire here rather than overseas and lower the H-1B visa quota for starters.

Really, what knob can the Fed turn to get companies hiring?

It's great when arrogant insurance companies get screwed by someone smarter then them.
