Brief explanation of the game: You turn your phone's GPS on, and a modified Google Map shows a bunch of portal things that you walk to in the real world, then, I don't know, conquer or hack or zap or something. The logic is to get you to explore new places, and apparently socialize with other people wandering around staring at their phones.Schlich wrote:have you tried ingress? It's the same company, and i've heard good things about it from a few friends. don't know what the format's like.Maclowery wrote:I can't deny that it's kind of fascinating to imagine wandering around New York City finding stuff in my phone by going to exotic or unique places. If this was presented in some way other than Pokemon, I'd be incredibly interested. Even having never played a second of Pokemon in my life, I would probably still try it out.
It's an interesting idea to use GPS. I tried this thing for about a half hour in my neighbhorhood, wandering around looking like an idiot as my phone told me to go toward a Portal. Everything is level 8, I am level 1, so I am completely useless. There are so many portals that the game is completely uninteresting. I wandered through Central Park awhile, and every 100 feet I had a new thing to be useless at. The actual stuff on the phone is completely off-putting. The sci-fi mumbo jumbo was thoroughly uninteresting - not only killed 60% of my phone's battery in no time at all.
My idea for a much more entertaining game: Severely lessen the amount of targets - pokemon, portals, historical artifacts, underground vampire nightclubs - so that my phone buzzes if i get within a few blocks, and I think "Hey, cool, I'll just walk over to 46th and level up my whatsit". I have no idea how this game could possibly be interesting in a commuter or rural area, but the logic could be successful in an urban zone. Thanks for the recommendation, though!
