I think many of the coldest people on this board will have trouble with this. Jimmy's family at this point. I'm having trouble conceiving the idea.

If this is true, the Cards better have scouted this guy...25 is a fairly ripe age to be hitting AA. FWIW, he's also not in the Padre's top ten prospects.

With that said, though, I'm not sure what sort of return we should be expecting for a late 30s beat up CFer... I was hoping for a prospect toward the bottom of someone's top ten list at a position of need. If UK is right that he would crack our top ten, and I value his opinion on matters like this, then I don't think we should be expecting to see a deal come along much better than this one anytime soon.

I was just expecting Edmonds to finish in St. Louis. I guess you could argue that we don't know for sure he's retiring. if we're not going to be that good next year anyway, it's hard to understand dealing him. If it's true we'll have saved some payroll at centerfield and shortstop. I just hope they use it somewhere.

The saved payroll is nice, but not necessary. The more important thing would be giving yourself a shot at a cheap, team-controlled plus bat (with average defense?) at a position of impending need a few years down the road. Even if there's only a 1 in 5 shot of him panning out, it's a good risk for the organization. If that shot hits, you've brightened the future prospects for this organization tremendously.

I don't particularly want to dump Edmonds for nothing...but, if he would be happy in SD and if he could leave STL feeling that his time here was well spent and that he was treated well by the organization, then you simply have to move him if you're getting someone with a legitimate shot back. This organization is just too thin to do otherwise.

In 2000 we dumped Bottenfield and Adam Kennedy and struck gold with Jimmy Edmonds. I'm having a little different reaction to this trade.
Also the important question in this that no one is asking, What will the cub fans talk about?
