As you say, the Cardinals will need innings next year, especially since their starters had an unusual run of good health last year.

I'm not sure what the team wants to do: dump salary or try to get an o.k. prospect or two. Either way, the team has to eat salary.

Of course, some of this may be Gray running for the lifeboats, and the Cardinals trying to accommodate him.

Sonny says he wants to win, and the Cardinals will probably not be in a position to win until after he’s retired. Sooner I hope, but I don’t think next year. Having a soon to be 36 year old pitcher making $35 million on your staff when he wants to be somewhere else is not a recipe for success. I think he’s a professional and will give his all no matter where he plays. But he’s probably watching the playoffs wishing he were there.

Sounds like Bloom is thinking of keeping Sonny.

Curt Bishop of Sports Illustrated hypothesizes that Bloom might trade Sonny to the Reds. Sounds like smoke and mirrors to me.

Zero chance the Reds take his contract.

Sports Illustrated churns out a lot of speculative junk articles these days.

Someone posted this to Facebook yesterday. It came up in my feed tonight. I didn’t know Facebook spam included Cardinals spam.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that is entirely fake and probably AI written. I don't see any comments like that from Gray on Reddit, it doesn't say where and when he made any comments like that, the social media accounts mentioned aren't linked or quoted, and the article is full of emdashes which is a big AI thing.

Also this general sentence formulation is a huge AI tell:
he doesn’t just see St. Louis as a stop on his career — he wants to stay because of who the Cardinals are
That isn’t just lip service — it’s a mentality grounded in deep respect for the organization’s legacy.
he doesn’t want to ride out the rebuild as a placeholder — he wants to be part of the core
his commitment is more than just a personal decision — it’s a symbol of what they believe the franchise should be
the story of a rebuild isn’t just about the future — it’s about resurrection
"X isn't just Y - it's Z." I see it all the time now.

It hasn't just ruined them — it's destroyed them.
