Chris Paul was out of his prime, leaving a failed project--and most critically: not joining the best team ever (or at least of a generation), a championship team that was the heavy, heavy favorite to be the next champion.

If God has forbidden it, he has a funny way of showing it--taking out Kawhi one year and then Chris Paul the next.

Kevin Durant can do whatever he wants. Of course he wants to win championships. I just wish he wanted to prove anything whatsoever as well.

Me and Kevin Durant appear to disagree on what meaningful competition is. I guess I agree with Kevin Durant when he said:

I don't thinks he's "being competitive." To dip into hyperbole (which I am prone to do wrt the NBA), I don't think it's impressive to beat Chinese guys at Scrabble, even if you get a huge trophy and a interview with Jim Gray.

It's just barely sport. You'd never see pick-up teams picked like this. I'd rather watch the 1992 Dream Team scrimmage than play the Marshall Islands. I want to see competition at it's peak, not just performance.

And the illusion--at the very least--of a sliver of hope is important to me as a long suffering Blazers fan.

Maybe Giannis won't sign with the Celtics (or whatever) and this kind of thing will just be a passing fad. God I hope so.

God forbid a professional at the very peak of their job make the personal decision to go work for the best rather than consider the external opinions saying that that professional should do with their career what others want.

Going to work for the best, sure. I'm not really talking about "going to work", making a living, etc. though.

Athletically, even at irrelevant levels, I always wanted to compete and do something great. It's like watching Team USA beat the rest of the world in the Olympics. I've never been that impressed. Guys like Harden and Curry and Westbrook surely could have been part of the 2016 Olympic team that won the championship by 30 points. They opted not to.

It's not even remotely the same thing. No MLB team has ever been as much of a lock to win a championship as Golden State was, and no single baseball player impacts a team as much as they do in basketball.

You're entitled to your opinion, and Durant is entitled to do what he wants, no doubt. He wants championships instead of competition. It's not the worst offense ever, but I do think it says something about him.

Since any shape of fruit goes here (apples, oranges, whatehaveyou): if you and your YMCA team join a U-10 basketball league, I'll think the league is truly a joke and question your competitive drive.
