There are no minimum standards for auto insurance?
Sure there are, just like there were min standards before ACA came along for health insurance.

ACA though gets to raise/decide what the new min coverage is.

The diff is, you can still get catastrophic auto collision. You can get it set so low/cheap, that if you get in an accident that is your fault, and the other person has to go to the hospital, that your policy pays hardly anything...and you have to pay the rest out of your pocket.

ACA took away that option for health insurance.

And that's a BAD thing??

What if you decide not to pay for the "other person's" medical bills after you hit them with your car? How is that fair?

Yes it is. If I choose to take that risk, it's my choice. If something happens and I have to pay out of pocket, and I have the money? I should be able to make that choice.

And your example happens now (when you don't pay their bills). That's when you sue them for your bills/lawyer fees. Happens right now.

Sure, you can sue them. But if they don't have $150,000 to pay the medical bills, then the other person is just screwed. You surely understand how that's not fair, don't you?

You shouldn't be able to make that choice, when other peoples lives and financial well-being are at stake. If you want to roll the dice with your own well-being, that's one thing.......... but you shouldn't have the right to roll the dice with others.

And you guys know that most people with catastrophic health insurance have money, right? Usually a lot of money.

When something bad happens, they pay their bills.

The people who you guys are complaining that you'll have to pay for when something bad happens are not the people with catastrophic coverage...it's those with NO insurance.

Oh really?

Well, never mind, then.

I've heard this argument a lot and I just don't think it's true. Sure, some insurance policies were probably [expletive]. And, there's probably not a person on this board that hates insurance companies as much as I do.

But, I know of many a people that have now looked at the exchange policies, compared them to their policies and chosen to stay with their policies only to have them cancelled. And, those same people have run the gamut from never seeing a doctor to having heart surgery. Obviously some of them might not know what their insurance covers, but I have a hard time believing those that have had surgery and want to stay with their current provider don't know exactly what they're signing up for.

Sure they wanted to stay with their current provider. I'm assuming that the premiums are cheaper......... so it doesn't really matter what the benefits are.

Let's assume Sally's insurance plan didn't cover major medical. So Sally gets a bill for $100,000 for the heart surgery (just a random number). Sally can't afford to pay that bill, so she just pays ten bucks a month, or whatever. Sally never really gets the bill paid off, but why does she care? The rest of us will pick up the slack, and Sally is still saving 50 bucks a month on her premiums, so it works out great for her!
Again, what? Did you even read what I wrote are did you just figure it was time for you to say the same thing again?

No. I'm not talking about finding the cheapest premium. I'm talking about people who had surgeries, paid their premiums, paid their deductibles and paid all their medical bills. They not only know what they have, they used it, and preferred it to what was on the exchange.

Instead of assuming and making up fake situations, let's talk about real life.

You didn't say ANY of that. You simply said that they had heart surgery, and they liked their policy.

So you had discussions with several people who assured you that they've paid all of their medical bills, deductibles, etc.? Really? Those would be odd conversations to be having with folks. And these same people, coincidentally, are some of the twelve or so that have actually been able to get on the website and look at the exchanges?

That's handy.

I assume you asked them why their policy was cancelled, also?
Parents brothers and close friends. Yeah. I know lots about them. And every now and then we have grown up conversations about worldly issues that include money. I don't ask if they pay their bills. Thats kind of a given.

First of all, I'm sorry that you've got close friends & family that had to have heart surgery. I hope they're doing well.

Did you ask any of them why their insurance policies were cancelled?

I don't get out all that much, but I haven't talked to anybody who has had their policy cancelled (I know it's happening here and there.... but I think it's less than 2% of Americans, so it's pretty rare), so I haven't had a chance to have the conversation. It sounds like you know several....... so I'm curious what the reasons are.
