Via twitter, Pit backed out because they didn't want to pay the high price.

Re: 2016-2017 Blues (Hockey) Season
I think that seems the most likely outcome to me. Something like: if the Caps don't have a 2018 2nd it becomes a 2019 first. It's really just a very confusing condition.MrCrowesGarden wrote:I do wonder about the condition since WSH doesn't have a 2018 2nd. Maybe if Washington does acquire one, we get that pick, otherwise it becomes a 1st? If we don't get anything from that pick, it's bad.albertmvpujols wrote:This is a late 1st rounder (pretty decent likelihood of it being the 31st overall) in what is considered a weak draft class, a future 2nd rounder that is conditional (hopefully it becomes a first in some situation), and a lackluster forward prospect the Blues have in spades AND we retained salary to make it work.JCShutout wrote:If the 2nd is conditional/lost, then we didn't get enough. If we get it (or a 2nd in 19 or whenever) then its probably about as good as you would expect.
If the tables were turned, and the Blues were renting a player they would not resign, a longshot prospect, a 1st and 2nd would be tough to pay.
This is by no means a good deal and I would hesitate to call it anything but a bad deal. The Blues gave up more for a rental goaltender in Ryan Miller and goaltenders have the least trade value typically of any position in hockey. They gave up just as much for JayBo who nobody really wanted because of his salary. Nearly every year rentals go for more than this.

if he turns out to be a 2nd/3rd liner at C? sure...JCShutout wrote:1st from contenders are always mid-to-upper-twenties. That the draft class is weak is just bad luck.
Yes, Sanford is likely a 2nd/third liner, but those guys are useful. The more you have, the better the chance of one sticking, or they become trade bait later if you have too many. No one is giving up a top prospect for a rental anymore. Like in baseball, young players are the best way to build.
I didn't say this is the best trade ever, I'm saying its probably about as good as we can get right now. Can't change the past, and dwelling on possible Taylor Hall trades don't change the present.
but he's not going to be a 2nd liner...possibly not even a 3rd liner. 4th is what a lot of scouts have been saying...and the tweets from sportswriters are saying the 1st rounder in 2017 is the real key to this trade. which tells you something with how bad this draft class is supposed to be.

I'd love a better return, but what else would we reasonably get for him now? (not before the season, but now) Remember, if we keep him, he walks for nothing.

I don't really do twitter, so I can't find the original one I read that was linked to an article I can no longer find, as many other things have popped up when I google around as the news spreads. This is one reason why twitter is stupid.

oh, i'm with you...i said all along that i didn't believe DA would trade him. i was wrong.JCShutout wrote:I'd love a better return, but what else would we reasonably get for him now? (not before the season, but now) Remember, if we keep him, he walks for nothing.
i thought we wouldn't trade him, not because of the return, but because armstrong is so bad at his job.
we obviously don't know...but i'm betting most GMs would've gotten a heck of a lot more that what DA got.
but like you said...i didn't think he'd trade him at all. so i'll stop [expletive]...soon lol
-edit...ok not a heck of a lot more...the draft picks are what they are...but the prospect SHOULD have been much better.

Remember, there is no guarantee Shatty resigns with the team who trades for him. If the tables were turned, and the Blues were in Washington's position, would you trade more than a 1st, 2nd and a decent prospect? I don't think other GMs possibly get more right now.
Other GMs probably trade him before the season and get more, but now, I didn't expect a lot more.

Re: 2016-2017 Blues (Hockey) Season
I honestly believe this was his best offer on the table. (Really why would he take a deal that wasn't). The deadline is still just under 2 days away now and I'm not sure why he wouldn't have held out for more. Maybe the offer goes away if he waits, but there is no way that he couldn't have at least found something comparable. The biggest issue to me is I would've much rather had one B/B+ prospect that was closer to the NHL. I know we have to restock a bit, but guys like Petro/Tank are not going to be in their prime forever. We've now lost Backes/Shatty/Oshie over the last 2 years and have very little depth in our forward prospect pool and this does little to change that.JCShutout wrote:I'd love a better return, but what else would we reasonably get for him now? I'm frustrated that the window is closing (if it isn't closed already) and Armstrong has no direction in which he wants to take this team.

So who do the Blues plug into that key defensive role? I've took a look at who they could possibly call up & there aren't many options that are ready to step into a playoff race that I can tell.
