The playoffs this year don't matter too much... and you plug Colten into Shatty's role and call up someone for the 3rd pairing.

Other GMs probably trade him before the season and get more, but now, I didn't expect a lot more.
If it was a position of need absolutely. With Niskanen and Carlson as the other RHD I'm not sure I would have if I were Washington, but this does allow them to hide Shatty's defensive deficiencies on the third pairing while getting an elite PP QB. I really think Shatty will be elite there taking OZone starts and being sheltered. Washington also is without a cup and with Ovie aging and some of their core being UFAs at the end of the year it made some sense to pay that for a rental. I'm sure the weaker draft played a part.

I'd absolutely have no problem paying this price if we were the leading team in the NHL for a pure rental that filled a positional need though.

I'd imagine we'll see Bortuzzo get some of those starts with Jordan Schmaltz getting a look as well.

I'm now reading that the 2nd rounder is a 2019 conditional 2nd and it only happens if the Caps resign Shatty (not likely) or they make it to the ECF this year with Shatty playing 50% of the games in the first two rounds. I really hope this isn't true.

Looks true. So the only guarantees are a late first and an okay prospect. We can also get some garbage picks if the Caps trade Shatty before July 1.

Oh... and now we have nothing left from the Oshie trade because we traded Copley as well for Brad Malone, a 27 year old in the AHL.

Well, going through the active roster which minus Shattenkirk only has 6 guys the Vluez don't really have anyone to that can even remotely come close to filling Shattys production. Schmaltz has potential, but he's no where near a proven commodity.

There is no doubt the PP is going to suffer as will the offense as a whole. I think it is important to get Schmaltz some sheltered minutes behind Petro/Parayko in what should be a lost year. I'd be surprised if they hold onto the playoff spot now. Maybe we'll get lucky and win the lottery and draft that ever elusive top line center. I think we are overdue for a break.

Between their two trades, the Caps have to show for it Oshie, Shatty and Copley. No lost assets.

The Blues have to show for it Zach Sanford, Brad Malone, a 2017 1st and a possible 2019 2nd. They had and lost a year of Brouwer, two games of Copley, and a 3rd round pick that was sent back to Washington with our 1st to move up and take Tage Thompson.

Hold on now.

Copley is a moot point. He started with Washington and is back with Washington. He's probably also a backup goalie at best.

They got two years of Oshie, and a couple months of ShattDeuces. Oshie with the Caps has been about the player he was with the Blues--good, not great. Unlike when he was with the Blues, he actually had a good playoff showing last spring. Shattenkirk is a good offensive d-man. He's a fairly average or worse defensive d-man. He was pretty crappy during the playoffs last season. I'm honestly not going to miss him much.

The Blues did get a year of Brouwer (who helped in the playoffs), Malone, a late 1st round pick, and a possible 2nd. That's not a great haul for 2 years and 2 months of good-not-elite players, but it's not nothing.

I'm not going to say this was an excellent set of deals. They are poor, not awful. Shattenkirk was not doing the Blues any favors by blocking potential deals.

Armstrong has been an OK GM, but he basically has the Blues stuck in pergatory, unable to make the leap.

Remember how Copley was the guy we had to have in the Oshie trade? The guy that was supposed to be the justification for a trade that wouldn't otherwise be accepted on NHL 16? We just sent him back to the team that sent him to us for a bottom 6 AHL player who's 27 years old.

Now I'm reading that the Blues were insistent on Sanford being in this trade and didn't bother to ask about Vrana or Bowey. Not sure how I'm supposed to feel about that after Copley.

I guess in a vacuum the trade would've been fine. Low 1st and B prospect for Shatty is what I was saying earlier... but after the Wild gave up as much or more for Martin Hanzal and Ryan White, it seems like we should've done better. A guaranteed 2019 2nd at least..
