Why are we letting Omicron influence ANYTHING in the day-to-day life for the average person?

I certainly don't advocate for people going in public when they are sick. But there's a huge gap between totalitarian hellscape and doing absolutely nothing. We are leaning much too far towards the hellscape option.
I don't understand your rant anymore.

What government mandates needs to be rolled back?

Aside from a select few places which already required vaccinations, there's hardly any federal vaccine requirements. There's absolutely zero legitimate talk from the government about returning to a previously seen US flavored lockdown, let alone the real lockdowns like you see in China. There's no federal mask mandate aside from travel afaik. States and cities are making their own choices, with varying degrees of enforcement, but even then, it's far from a totalitarian hellscape. And all that is in the middle of the worst outbreak we've seen to date. Hell even school districts are staying open amidst outbreaks that would have previously shut them down if covid/schools hadn't become politicized.

News agencies are terrible about using fear to drive clicks and views. Either fear of the covid or fear of the government response and loss of liberties.
Sorry, this is a difficult form of communication sometimes. Lots of different convos, quick posting, and different times available to post.

I'm not saying it is currently a hellscape. But it's leaning too far that way. A few places "already mandating vaccines" is still a few too many. It is still discrimination based on health status. People can say it is justified, but I don't like how quickly those rights disappeared. To be fair, I can shop elsewhere.

Hardly any federal vaccine requirements is too many. The government mandating anything vaccine related, including federal workers or healthcare workers, is insane to me considering there is no liability. The school convos I stay out of because I don't currently have a pony in that race, but I deal with similar issues at work and I can't really tell you what the right answer is with staying open. With kids, they have very little risk but they can spread it.
Should the military be allowed to mandate vaccines for soldiers?

I think everyone could agree that woman infecting herself was a bad idea. Though I think it does show that natural immunity isn’t the way to go for everyone.
I don’t get what the idea of that plan was supposed to be. Natural immunity is real, but why would you intentionally try and get it? Immunity helps prevent you from getting sick. That’s the only reason why you’d want it. If not getting sick is your goal, how does intentionally getting sick make any sense? Is there some group of people who are into this idea? Is there some of logic to it as they see it?
On that note
I don’t think covid killed her. We’ve completely skipped that part and are talking about the topic as if it did. Not entirely relevant because the point remains. Still, odd.
Seems plausible to me but not really enough info. Heard a few stories about people seemingly improving and then going back on a ventilator a day or two later. And was she really fine? Hard to say.

What’s really dumb is she seems fairly old to be going for natural immunity. I wouldn’t risk it at 48 and my current weight which isn’t that bad but about 25 pounds more than it should be.

I know this wasn't directed at me, but none other than George Washington did this during the revolutionary war and it may have been the difference between us winning and losing. Soooooo.....

It's a complex issue, but fwiw, I could not care less that George Washington did that. It doesn't really apply here, especially considering the risk for the extremely fit 18-35 year olds that make up most of our military is very small.

It doesn't seem like a great idea to give our entire national defense the same new treatment with no long term studies. I guess we'll see. Also, I already understood that one pretty much signs their life away when you joined the military before 2020.

COVID fatigue is a real thing most of us are experiencing these days. So I was really concerned when noticing this thread grew by almost 10 pages today.

I read through all the posts, and in light of the contentious topics being discussed, I wanted to thank everyone for showing respect for each other and allowing varying viewpoints to be expressed without devolving into personal attacks.

This was a good day, GRB. Now if we could just get baseball to get their act together….

So, they're two different topics. There's the original point: the vax is safer than covid for the majority of people, certainly 57 year olds.

That can be true and this lady could have died from something other than covid. But, stories like this drive me nuts because it's like they're using anecdotes, and in this case certainly a questionable anecdote, to prove the point. And, they use the headline more than the facts. By 'they' I mean whoever started this story, which seems like the bbc. And, then the people that 'they' that use this on twitter or wherever to rage and condescend and convey all sorts of negativity.

Regardless, what little information we have is she was getting ready to go for a walk, according to her son, and then died 10 minutes later after back pain and choking. I'll replace choking with gasping for air, and that's indicative of cardiac arrest/heart attack or acute pulmonary embolism. Assuming that's right, it could be that a blood clot formed during covid (known to happen) and that caused the heart attack. That is certainly possible, maybe even probable. Or, she just had a heart attack. Or she died from something else completely unrelated to covid. Point is no one has the facts, or the articles I've read certainly don't give the facts that would correlate covid and her death.

For instance, flip the story around and the information is presented very differently.

https://www.local10.com/news/local/2021 ... ral-cause/
A Miami Beach doctor who died about two weeks after he got Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine died in a manner that has been categorized as natural.

An official with the medical examiner’s office said Dr. Gregory Michael died from a condition that can cause internal bleeding and there is no medical certainty that the shot caused the disorder.

Michael’s death in January was investigated by the Florida Department of Health and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Samples from an autopsy were sent to the CDC.

The investigative team concluded that the 56-year-old died from complications of immune thrombocytopenia, otherwise known as ITP.

....

His wife said that three days after getting the shot, Michael noticed severe broken blood vessels on his feet and hands, prompting him to go the emergency room.

There, he was diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenia, which prevents blood from clotting.

According to his wife’s Facebook post, after two weeks of treatment, Michael had a hemorrhagic stroke caused by the lack of platelets, which took his life in a matter of minutes.

She said her husband was an advocate of the vaccine.

I think as long as recruiters make it clear that it is to be expected once you sign, then I understand. I realize they face things I never would like chemicals and different environments. I don't know what they take, and I know there have been a lot of issues in the past. But again, they basically already sign their rights away when they join. I'd be interested in learning more about the subject.

So you are okay with federally mandated vaccines then, right? At least in this situation?
