I saw that in the theater when I was in college.

The theater in the town where I went college let you in for free if you had a student ID. And of the two screens they had, somehow we deduced that "Exit to Eden" was the best option available.

Rosie O'Donnell in a dominatrix outfit is every bit as horrifying as you'd imagine.

thus the NSFW tag. we need some more specific tags though - like NSFHSL (not suitable for a healthy sex life) or NSBD (not suitable before dinner)

Sad that it is not to have seen this movie yet, it is great to have the huge void in my movie-watching repertoire - I get to see classics like this, as if they were brand new.
this is why the classics are so great.. they never let you down
:?

Anyway, On the Waterfront is pretty good. East of Eden is better. I still haven't seen A Streetcar Named Desire.
what's the :? for?

It's a little indulgent in places, but there were a lot of really poignant moments and Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz played off each other quite well. Debbie Harry's (to my surprise) appearance was just bonus. The side stories involving the friend (played by Dennis Hopper) and his son (played by Stellan Skarsgaard) both added a lot. 8.5/10
Seconded. Elegy was probably my favorite film of 2008 and it isn't anywhere on any awards lists. Ben Kingsley is just phenomenal in it.

"Classics" are no more of a guarantee to be a good movie than any other movie.

Agreed. The only thing guaranteed about classics are that if you think it wasn't that great, more people will tell you how wrong you are.

Well, then it's just not a very meaningful thing to say, because one person's idea of a classic is already subjective.

I can say for myself, though, that, for example, I thought Bonnie and Clyde was a pretty dull movie, and most people would consider that a classic.

i guess the word "classic" isn't defined very well.. i wasn't meaning everything you
see on Turner CLASSIC Movies.. and yes.. it is definitely subjective to the person..
i just meant that if i look at AFI's top 100 "classic" movies or whatever.. there's a good
chance that all of those .. even if i don't personally like one of them.. are going to have some
pretty amazing qualities that most people could agree on..

and we were talking about "on the waterfront".. one of the best ever.. that's what
i was referring to..

Fair enough.

I do like On the Waterfront a lot, but I think its reputation has been inflated because of its historical significance, and it's hard to take the film the same way when you know the backstory of Kazan's House of Un-American Activities participation.
