Tony spewed this little nugget on his radio show this morning regarding why they were having trouble with last place teams:

We're not going to beat them in effort or energy.

Really?

What's so egregious about that statement? A lot of people act like bad teams are just going to roll over and die when we play them. That's obviously not what happens (and that's what La Russa is pointing out).

But why should it be a given that the ostensibly better team be outhustled by the lesser team?

One of the fundamental tenets of being a hardworking team is thinking you can outwork anyone.

What happened to playing a hard nine? Is this team just not buying what Tony's selling, has he mellowed, or what? They are still in contention, but they perform like a last place team riding out the end of the season.

It's not egregious that the Nats/Buccos are playing hard. It's the statement that the Cardinals can't match their effort that I find, well, horrid.
