I kind of get the feeling TN fans wanted a better hire and are in a mob mentality of clasping onto something/anything to not believe this is it....especially when the sentimentality seemed to be Gruden or bust.

This is unequivocally true, but people can do the right thing for the wrong reasons. Schiano wasn't some guy who stopped for gas in State College, he was an assistant there for 6 years, and someone testified under oath that he saw Sandusky's behavior first hand.

Did someone testify Schiano saw Sandusky firsthand or did someone testify someone said Schiano saw Sandusky firsthand? I thought it was the later. (ETA: Again, all I'm finding is the later that McQueary said Bradley said Schiano said.... And, Bradley testified under oath that Schiano did not say it. So McQueary testified to double hearsay and the middle man, Bradley, testified the opposite.)

I don't want to be wrongly defending someone who ignored this situation. But, I do want to point out that I don't think it's as cut-and-dried as people are making it out to be.

I'm open to the idea that Schiano should only be punished to a certain extent for the testimony of others that hasn't/can't be verified. Given the gravity of that situation though, it's hard sell that 'costing him a SEC head coaching job making millions of dollars' after he's already made many millions coaching since the incidents referred to in that testimony is a bridge too far though.

schiano prolly could have made millions in a defamation suit that he never brought because there is probably some truth to that testimony.

Is this the same John Zeigler?

Ziegler interviewed Sandusky from prison and debuted some of that interview live on the Today Show on March 25, 2013. Ziegler steadfastly maintains that Sandusky was a "chaste pedophile" and committed no sexual acts with his victims.[32] Ziegler, who initially said he believed Sandusky was guilty of the crimes he was accused of, now believes that Sandusky is innocent.[33] Ziegler's prison interview with Sandusky came under fire by the Paterno family. Paterno family attorney Wick Sollers released a statement, describing it as "transparently self-serving and yet another insult to the victims and anyone who cares about the truth in this tragic story" [34]

He then began a career in talk radio, working at various stations before ending up at WWTN in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was fired after having said the word "n*gger" on the air, in, according to Ziegler, "a rather academic discussion about the way whites and blacks view each other".[11] Ziegler has explained this event as him referencing what the boxer Mike Tyson said at a press conference, where Tyson referred to himself using that word.[12]

From a strictly football standpoint, I've never been a big Schiano fan. To this day, you can hardly find any of his former players who have good things to say about him. He has been a good to decent coordinator/position type coach, but he would have been a huge failure at UT imo.

I'm telling ya....you guys would be impressed with what Campbell can do. He took a perennial loser (ISU) and made them a winner in less than two seasons in power conference.....without a trophy cabinet to recruit with. Having said that, I hope Vol Nation gets the guy they want.

I didn't really think Gruden would happen, but as recently as 10 am this morning a CBS Sports article was saying that he was still in play. Here's the link:

I've been following this for some time on message boards, and I don't remember very many posters dismissing Schiano as a candidate because of his association with Sandusky/Penn State. Many didn't like the hire because they thought he would be a bad coach, even though he's the only guy who has won at Rutgers in years. You also had some saying Mullen would be a bad hire, even though he did the same thing at Miss State.

Vol fans (and I am one) were hoping for a home run hire after the mess we've endured over the last 10 years. This wasn't the sexy hire that was hoped for, and I believe as others have written, that unhappy fans grabbed onto the Penn State thing. If it had been Gruden with this baggage most of the fan base would reason it away.

On the other hand, It wasn't too long ago that UT had to settle a lawsuit for allowing a hostile sexual environment to exist, so that probably should have been considered before offering Schiano.


Vol chat boards (and call in shows) makes Cards Talk seem like a reasonable bunch of Einsteins.

i dont recall schiano being discussed as a possibility until literally the last couple of days. probably because he would have been so far down the list that he was in the "laughable" tier. Laughable because, like you mentioned, of the title 9 issues surrounding the university. The fact he's a mediocre coach (in a long line a recent hires) is secondary.

It understandable that people on the outside criticize the fanbase for what culminated today, but if they knew the complete story, it would probably make more sense.

Perhaps you guys should be asking yourself: would you want greg schiano for your program? my guess is probably no. Would you want the best possible hire available? My guess is probably yes.
