I didn't even consider that. That is a great point.I_Bleed_Red wrote:WHo is out? Good question, is it a setup to make a trade for a bat from a team that is looking for pitching? Jose Guillen for Marquis?
You gotta figure we'll trade one of our crappy underacheiving arms with a decent upside for a crappy underacheiving bat with a decent upside or something.

Honestly, still don't see how this improves the starting rotation. And who is out? Is Weaver a definite to immediately start this weekend? I'm not going to be one of those people that think "it couldn't be worse". Look at his numbers, does this help the situation: numbers

Most likely it won't improve anything but... there's hope.JohnnyJay wrote:Honestly, still don't see how this improves the starting rotation. And who is out? The league average ERA is something like 4.28. The last two season Jeff Weaver has been an above-average starter.
I don't think he go from being a pretty good starter to this bad overnight. Maybe he's hurt or something. I don't know.
I'm not going to sit here and say he's going to pull a Chris Carpenter and become Cy Young-esque, but you never know... maybe he'll become a league average starter. At this point, that's an improvement over what we've got.

Hey, I think he's a fairly reasonable gamble to take . . .planet pujolsian wrote:I'll defer to fanforever and Steverino. How short of a leash will he have?
Here's the thing with Weaver though -- he is NOT a "leash" sort of guy. You have to stick with him or else don't bother with him. He's like Marquis. He's a LOT like Marquis. You pretty much KNOW that every ten starts will have so many league-average ones, so many very good ones, and so many disasters. If you give up and yank him after a few disasters, you're basically foregoing the average and good ones, and if you stick with him long enough, you'll get the average and good ones eventually. Just don't decide after a string of average and great ones that he's finally put it all together . . . enjoy the production and rest assured that the clunkers are juuuuust around the corner.
Assuming that he is not simply completely shot (in which case the average and great ones go way down or stop). Which is a possibility -- he fits the profile -- but I really don't know him well enough to say either way.
