There's a part of me that thinks the old swing was just his homerun power swing, and that his regular swing is more tame. I like watching swings and fundamentals in general get smoother, as kids mature. So this is good case to watch. Especially if the bigtime power he's been scouted for turns into something else.
It is interesting - I'm sure in that showcase he's getting his money's worth, but there are plenty of great lefties who really transferred their weight and hit with a stiff front leg and their back foot off the ground - violent like Bryce Harper or Babe Ruth, but Griffey did this somewhat as well. Then you've got guys like Edmonds, Bonds and Cano who just pick their foot up and put it down, but they of course all get into their back hip to generate power.
If you look through Cho's videos, he's doing a lot of cage work on specific parts of his swing. Some show him walking his left leg through his swing to finish, then others he's planting, waiting two seconds and then the pitch comes. There are some older in game videos where he definitely has the leg kick so I don't think it's just a showcase thing.
There's something there. Especially if we look at guys that werent prodigious power hitters to begin their careers. Ortiz is a good case, given that he wasnt anything special until he left Min. Maybe his swing was just taylormade to beat the sh!t out of the Cardinals.
