My quick analysis, and I hope that this doesn't get lost in the 10,000 posts this thread is sure to eventually generate.

Going back two seasons now, the offense's biggest problem is that the productivity that we got in '04 and '05 from Edmonds, Rolen, and Walker was not there anymore. Walker had retired, and Edmonds and Rolen were no longer producing at their previously lofty levels.

Now, we could have gone into this season with the same ol', same ol'--Edmonds in CF, Rolen at 3B. Fan favorites! Hitting in their usual 4/5 spots in the lineup. Well that wasn't doing the job anymore--I contend that the Cardinals would have made the playoffs last year had they had two 120+ OPS+ hitters in those spots instead of 89 Rolen and 88 Edmonds. We're obviously not happy about it--we're trading away two fan favorites here--but we're saving money, and we have gotten back at least one consistent 120+ OPS+ hitter in Glaus (hopefully). Edmonds hasn't been replaced yet, but Rasmus is on the radar, and I'm not sure how much worse we'll be with Ludwick/Skip Scott shouldering that load in the meantime.

As for Walker, he's never been replaced. However, Ankiel+Duncan vs. Walker+Sanders--this might end up being pretty close.

We're probably never going to see the 2004 MV3 again. It was a magical combination of 3 superstars having near career years at the same exact time, along with a good supporting cast. It was a great year, and sadly didn't end with a championship. But I'll always cherish memories of that, and conveniently forget how it ended in St. Louis for Edmonds and Rolen.

OK, that ended up not being so brief, but in summary--while the names hurt to see go--the Cardinals are probably a better team now that they've moved on from Edmonds and Rolen.

While certainly not a bonified source, I saw this post in Bernie's Pressbox (third party reference to what someone heard on KFNS):

Troy Glaus' agent just told Frank and Bob on KFNS that he was already told that Scott Rolen has also passed his physical so the deal is done!

Have to wait for Commish Selig to signoff on the deal because of the money changing hands being over $1M

As an aside, he said Troy once told his mom at age 6 that he would be a baseball player someday for the St. Louis Cardinals and that Troy had always wanted to come to St. Louis.

Said it only took about an hour for Troy and his wife to okay the deal, waive the no trade clause and pickup his player option so he could come to St. Louis.

I love STL but that description was pretty spot on...

STL is still pretty rednecked compared to a lot of other larger cities, at least the ones that I've been in...



I think the best sum up is that this probably isn't exact value for the type of game-changer that Scott Rolen can be, but it's about as close as Moz was ever going to get, it seems, considering there weren't a lot of teams (or any I guess) willing to throw a couple of B+ level prospects at us (which would have been the best type of trade for the Cards in their current position)...

it's going to be interesting to see if Chavez is traded anytime soon because that will give us a pretty good evaluation of this trade when you consider how equal Chavez and Rolen are (Rolen was the better player last year, but Chavez is a bit younger with a little less health concerns, so it may just about equal out)...

Great deal for the Cards in my opinion, considering the return, proposed offers earlier & the whole TLR rift. We need to bring down our lofty defensive expectations now (& I need to retire my Rolen jersey) but a good deal by MO here. Wonder if Rolen would enjoy playing in the pitching heavy AL but I wish him well.
