I could understand that from Rolen, though you have to understand there will be a double standard with Pujols on your team.

I suppose we all have an arbitrary line we might draw regarding who needs micro-managing and who doesn't. Aaron Miles is below that line (along with those for most rollercoasters) and Pujols is above it. If Rolen thinks he's also above that line, I'd tend to agree.

I won't start a new thread for this, but the Cleveland Press says that the Cards discussed a Rolen + Reyes for Peralta + Lee deal.

How do you guys feel about that?

Factoring in position, I'd say Peralta is about as valuable as Glaus... but then you factor in that he's younger, cheaper, etc, then he's the better player. How is he defensively?

As I recall, this was one of the big advantages touted for Rolen coming in to St. Louis. He wouldn't have to be "the" guy. Edmonds was here and Pujols had already come on strong. This was something Bowa did get on Rolen about, if I recall correctly. And I think I remember TLR saying Rolen wouldn't have to do that on the Cardinals.

I suspect TLR started treating Rolen differently once his performance went south. Didn't TLR say something to that effect?

I think LaRussa also thought that Rolen was at his best when he was playing a bit ticked off. Worked for the remainder of the '06 postseason after he was "benched".

But there's a balance beam there that LaRussa obviously fell off of.

I remember reading something like that. Can't imagine Rolen had much respect for him after that.

I've said it a number of times and I still believe it; there appears to be no "right guy" or "wrong guy" in this LaRussa v Rolen issue, as much as we'd like to place the blame squarely on one of their shoulders (no pun intended). They've both played it the wrong way from what I've heard described about the two of them.

And Will Carroll from BP weighs in. Due to legal stuff that I don't understand I'll paraphrase.


- TLR's talk at the winter meetings didn't help Rolen's value.
- Both players have significant health issues
- Glauss' feet problems are a reasonable risk for the Cards. Moving to grass will help.
- It was Rolen's lack of trust after the initial treatment and surgeries on his shoulder that were the beginning of the end.

(editors note - that's what I have been saying all along, this and not the postseason benching as the primary cause of the feud.)

- Chronic conditions tend to get worse and act up more frequently rather than fading away
- The deal comes down to whether or not the medical staffs on both sides have not only properly assessed both their new player, but also their own abilities.
