I find it amusing that the Cards are interested, and we think we have no chance at signing Holliday.
The biggest players are showing no interest, and we think they're a bunch of snakes waiting to strike.

We've seen our fair share of big name free agents which the Cardinals expressed interest in, end up signing else-where... typically with one of the big players. To have doubt is perfectly natural.

Yes, this is about Cards fans being down or having a poor attitude or expectations or whatever. I'm pretty sure everyone is taking any "news" with a huge grain of salt given that Mr. Propaganda SuperAgent is involved. A rather rational and logical discussion if you ask me, but maybe I'm taking you too literally.

As has been said before, it's understandable for Cardinal fans to assume we'll lose out on Holliday. It's been awhile since we've inked a big name star via free agency, not to mention the number one available FA out there. Signing Holliday might change that attitude somewhat but until then we'll probably remain fairly pessimistic.

I think the thing that's surprised me the most concerning the Holliday deal is that's the exact type of transaction that had a lot of Cardinal fans wanting to run Jocketty out of town, yet, there were really very few complaints about this deal.

In Jocketty's defense, he almost always re-signed the 2 and 3 month rentals that we traded our young talent for. Which reminds me of an argument I had over at Cards Talk around the time we re-signed Mulder. It was argued that the Mulder end of the deal, as far as the Cardinals were concerned, was over after the initial contract was up. In other words, despite our re-signing him, his performance after the new contract could not salvage the deal for the Cardinals. We'd already lost it by measuring Mulder's year and a half versus all that Oakland received. With that line of arguing, the Holliday as a Cardinal end of the deal is already over. Oakland, again, will reap whatever they get from Wallace and company but we got our two months and that's it. Anything else from Holliday will be measured against any subsequent deal. Not the Wallace deal.

We've also seen the Cardinals retain McGwire, Rolen, Edmonds and Pujols. That trend shows that the Cards are very, very good at retaining top talent.

For me, I think the Cardinals have a better chance at landing Holliday than any other team. But if you're asking me to bet on the Cardinals or on the field, I'm gonna take the field.

Some trades just don't pan out. Things don't always go as planned. We may have totally missed how good Haren was, but the Braves totally missed how good Wainwright was. I think it all comes out in the wash for the most part. I feel like the Holliday move gave us a much better chance at winning the World Series than before the trade. That is the reason you make trades. The players just didn't get it done. If we did win and Holliday was the WS MVP, Mo would be a god.

I think the fact that Boras is his agent and the rockies trading him communicates a lot about his priorities. Also, I doubt he has huge emotional ties to a team be played a few months for. He's going to ask for max dollars from a competitive team.

I was under the impression he wouldn't sign with the Rockies not because of the years/dollars (iirc 4/72) but because they wouldn't guarantee a NTC.

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak indicated Tuesday that the Cardinals will not purse outfielder Jason Bay, even if they miss out on Matt Holliday.
"We'll see how the market develops," Mozeliak said. "Is (Bay) a possibility? Sure. But right now it's fair to say he's not one of our top priorities." The Cardinals are reportedly intrigued by free agent Xavier Nady and would rather spend major cash on bolstering their infield and starting rotation if Matt Holliday moves on. Bay is drawing heavy interest from the Red Sox and Mets.
