The new Jack White album is pretty good - which is to say it is basically about a dozen new Jack White songs - and I'm OK with that.

I'm not the biggest Jack White fan in the world, but he recently did something cool, actually just down the street from where I live, at Third Man Records...he put on a live show, recorded it, put it on vinyl and passed it out to the recipients of the show that day, breaking the record for fasted ever recorded album (or something to that effect). Wished i had walked down there and tried getting into the show--it was unannounced so im not sure how the ticket process worked.

I've never been the biggest fan of his music, but i respect his talent.

Forgive me for being your father when it comes to music these days. Listening to the Civil Wars for the first time a good several years late. Great stuff. Maybe I heard 'Poison and Wine' before and have forgotten, but my God, it's gorgeous. Do they sell records to country fans, or is this purely indie music?

Seems like the division these days (read from me: three years ago) in indie is EITHER hard 80s where you use that same goddam seizure-inducing synth sound in every goddam song even though there's an entire goddam world of acoustic instruments and a lieterally unending potential of goddam sounds to create with tech, OR banjos and [expletive]. Believe it or not, I would fall on the latter if I didn't actually fall on audiobooks more often than anything else. I love banjos and [expletive]. I do not love, believe it or not, that goddam synth sound--hardly ever, at least.

I bet this is the dozenth time I've railed against 80s influence. What about that first question up there, though? I'm curious about that.

Got to see Girl Talk last night...been meaning to check him off my list for awhile...he didn't disappoint, favorite show of the year.

Also, for my fellow fans of super-depressing, fuzzed-out, acoustic slow music a la Mark Kozelek's early Red House Painters stuff, holy [expletive], get the self-titled album by Giles Corey (nom de guerre of Dan Barrett, member of Have a Nice Life, who released said album after an abortive suicide attempt).

Red House Painters-- I didn't realize they ever did enough or reached enough people to be able to be discussed in terms of 'early stuff.' I only know them as an opening band (before Archers of Loaf) for Weezer at my first non-Oregon Symphony concert in 1994. I met a fan at Uni years later (and got a couple songs from her), and honestly probably haven't even given them a thought in 10 years.

Hope that doesn't sound scoffy, or anything. I'm no musicista. And I was too overwhelmed to really be reached by any of those acts: my parents shouldn't have let me go at all, I was 13, but I was definitely the coolest kid in 8th grade the next day, and certainly didn't tell everyone how uneasy I was the whole night --it was one of those classic 'I don't want to be a grown-up' experiences The Wonder Years probably captured perfectly at some point. My mother has the t-shirt I bought in storage somewhere.

Red House Painters is awesome music for when you want to just sit around feeling infinitesimal and suicidal.
