Re: Music talk Thread
While we are talking musical instruments I'm amazed at how much quality you can get for not much money these days. I just bought an Ibanez acoustic bass a few weeks ago. It's great and it cost me like 200 bucks. That same day I was in guitar center and played a 200 dollar Fender Jazz bass. I was blown away. My first bass was a Fender P bass and it cost me like $400 and doesn't play as well as that $200 bass. There is pretty much no need to spend $2000 on a bass these days when you can get the job done just as well for almost nothing. I've thought long and hard about selling my Jazz bass that I paid something like $1200 for in 1999.
Before she passed away Nic bought this Gretch short scale guitar for $179, the damn thing was epic.

I love mandolin, but I don't have one yet, and haven't really done the research on what's good among entry-level models. In general, I'd say that you can get a better mandolin for less if you go for an A-style rather than F-style. Quality control is probably the biggest concern on any cheap instrument, so I'd be hesitant to buy online. I'd check both Craigslist and local music stores, and play around with everything in your price range. If you can't set it up yourself (I think I remember that you play guitar, so you may be able to adjust the action, etc.), it'd probably worth getting a set-up done professionally.Tambourine Man wrote:redbirdjazzzMrSaigon wrote:Who's our bluegrass guy here? Speaking of mandolin, I'm seeing Tim O'Brien and Hot Rize this coming weekend, and I'm super excited about it.

Ever tear through your music collection and just stat deleting [expletive] you haven't listened to in a long time? I do it a couple times a year. Clicking the empty trash button feels great. Enjoy mp3 heaven, Eddie Vedder.

Yes, indeed. Did that a few months ago when I realized I would never again subject myself to the awfulness that is Rush.Tambourine Man wrote:Ever tear through your music collection and just stat deleting [expletive] you haven't listened to in a long time?
