Watching it a couple of times, I don't have a problem with Beilein's strategy. Making a guy dribble a huge chunk of the court so he can put up a 40' jumpshot is preferable to anything in the paint. It would've helped if Gibson had moved towards Turner rather than backpedaling towards the basket for some odd reason, and Stu F. Douglass shouldn't have been the one trying to get a hand in Turner's face. But a strategy that forces a merely OK shooter to take a 40' jumpshot is nothing to cry about.
It's pretty terrible. There is no way a guy should get that clean of look with 3 seconds on the clock, starting under your own basket. There is no "in the paint" option for OSU.
Don't cover the ball, put one guy on Turner (who is clearly getting the ball) and the other four can defend the long pass. He was uninhibited until half court, which is ridiculous.
I was anticipating Wisconsin wouldn't show up against Illinois. The conference wanted Illinois to win so another team is selected for the NCAA tournament and Bo Ryan thinks playing all weekend can backfire the following week.

I'd personally cover the ball too to make the inbounds pass that much harder, but that can be argued. Yes, it was a 40 footer, but it's a 60 footer if you just guard him close on the inbounds and don't let him get his momentum going however he wants. I'd guard the ball and guard him, other three guys back. I watch a ton of basketball and the baseball pass never works unless you're Christian Laettner. Everyone knew Turner was getting the ball. Letting him get a full head of steam unimpeded towards the basket and basically leave him unguarded is a horrid strategy. It's a low percentage shot either way but Michigan did nothing to improve their chances to what should have been virtually 100%.

If they didn't show up, then they shouldn't have made the furious run to cut it to two. Wasted effort.

That's the thing. I was wrong - there was only 2.2 seconds. All you have to do is make sure he doesn't catch it with his momentum heading toward the basket.

I agree, but they shot poorly and Illinois was shooting well. They could have tied it near the end if Jason Bohannon had made a 3. But somehow I think they'll do well in the NCAA, winning at least the first 2 games. They are a high maintenance team, they look great at times and then the wheels fall off. Minnesota beat Mich St, the BigTen wants 6 in the tournament.

The first time, I didn't say anything, but now you've said it twice so I gotta know, what exactly do you mean by this? The Big 10 manipulated the games? Really?

Yes I do, the ref called a possession arrow late in the Wis-Ill game that another ref far away overruled and called a foul on Hughes. Obviously I can't prove the conference tells refs what to call but they certainly have a chance for more money with 6 teams in than with 4. People used to have the same skepticism about the NBA playoffs but refs definitely have manipulated those games.
Coaches of higher finishing teams have probably found going deep into the league tournament doesn't help their NCAA seeding much and is not worth the risk of burning out the players or having an injury, coupled with the knowledge the league prefers the 5th-6th teams to have a chance to get in, leads to subpar performance- they decide whether to try to win the league tournament or say screw it- and the refs are aware of this and make calls accordingly.
I keep reading blog posts about how the Badgers were lethargic. They forced 17 turnovers and had 11 offensive rebounds. They couldn't shoot to save their lives, even from the free throw line. And of course, this made them look terrible. But I don't think the "not-ready-to-play" and "lethargic: crowd have it right.
Teams that can't buy a basket always look terrible. Terrible shooting against a pretty good team, and still only lose by four points. Ugly, but ultimately not very important.
Illinois played well but ultimately blew the game against Ohio State. End of regulation and end of 1st OT they don't even get a shot off. Let Evan Turner play for 10 minutes with 4 fouls without ever going at him. I think the entire two OTs was Turner drives and either makes a layup or gets fouled. I was screaming for a big man to rotate over and take a charge. At a minimum, double him and force someone else to make a play. Pretty good effort though and I'd say they're in the dance.
