I love mandolin, but I don't have one yet, and haven't really done the research on what's good among entry-level models. In general, I'd say that you can get a better mandolin for less if you go for an A-style rather than F-style. Quality control is probably the biggest concern on any cheap instrument, so I'd be hesitant to buy online. I'd check both Craigslist and local music stores, and play around with everything in your price range. If you can't set it up yourself (I think I remember that you play guitar, so you may be able to adjust the action, etc.), it'd probably worth getting a set-up done professionally.

Speaking of mandolin, I'm seeing Tim O'Brien and Hot Rize this coming weekend, and I'm super excited about it.

It was pretty awesome. Of their old stuff, I really only missed out on "Just Like You" and "Nellie Kane." They hit most of the rest of them, plus several songs from their new album that comes out today. Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers made an appearance too, still looking suspiciously like the members of Hot Rize, and they were great as well.

I've been digging on Rush a little bit lately. I used to hate them and I kind of avoided them for a long time but I'm starting to get into them some. Oddly enough it was the album they put out a year or so ago that did it. I really like the song "The Wreckers."

I'm sure everything is booked, but if you had to recommend a hotel anywhere near the venue, what would you suggest?

Not sure if it is true or not but rumor is that Pearl Jam booked the Quad Cities concert simply because they'd never played here before.

That is the kind of thing they would do. Did you get tix?

Not yet. I'm waiting to see if prices come down at all on Stubhub. They actually have slightly, but still are way over face. We'll see...

The cheapest ticket on Stubhub for this is $170, and that's for 1 individual ticket halfway up the upper bowl. Lower bowl is $225. This is basically the same as when they went on sale. Usually Stubhub starts high, then comes down a bit, then rises again as the date gets near. I never saw them drop yet for this one. I still might get lucky but we shall see.

I'm sure everything is booked, but if you had to recommend a hotel anywhere near the venue, what would you suggest?

There is a Radisson right next to the arena, or a Stony Creek Inn a couple blocks down. Both are pretty nice, and within walking distance of the arena. Those would be the best options. IMO, the next best options are on the Iowa side*. These are the hotels I'd look at over there:
- Holiday Inn Express on Elmore Ave. in Davenport. It just opened this summer and has a really unique and nice (for this area) attached bar and restaurant. It is about 4 miles straight North up I-74 from the arena.
- Hotel Blackhawk - The best hotel in the area (and possibly the state of Iowa).
- The Radisson in Davenport.

These last two hotels are both in downtown Davenport, about 3.5 miles from the arena.



* The Centennial Bridge between Rock Island and Davenport is completely shut down right now for major repairs. This is not the bridge you'd take to get to the arena from Iowa, but because it is closed it means the bridges you would take will have more traffic. Allow at least 30 minutes to drive, just to be safe. The I-74 Bridge can get backed up on concert nights even when all the bridges are open. From downtown Davenport you can take the Government Bridge, but it can get bad right now, too.

Oasis' What's the Story Morning Glory has been re-issued. Hard to believe it'll be 20 years old next year--i remember getting it when i was grade school.

Been spinning it this morning and am being reminded of how great of an album it is.
