Cardinals scout Charles Peterson passes away from COVID-19
The Cardinals announced Sunday night that scout Charles Peterson, who had been hospitalized for nearly a month while battling COVID-19, has died.

“Charles had an incredible impact on our scouting department. He brought a tremendous work ethic, keen eye, and booming laugh with him every day. My prayers are with his wife Karen and family as anyone who ever talked to CP knew how proud he was of them,” said Randy Flores, the team’s scouting director, in a prepared statement.

Referring often to the "uncertainty" ahead for the the Cardinals, MLB, the financial situation for both, and the minor-league season for 2021, John Mozeliak confirmed a reduction of staff that is taking place with his baseball operations department this week.

The Cardinals have as many as 12 coaching positions in the minor leagues that are not being renewed, and one full-time scout is not being renewed. Other part-timers will also not be back with the team.

The team's Cardinals Core program is also being put "on pause," Mozeliak said, and that means its staff is also not likely to be back for the 2021 season. That staff included former players Ryan Ludwick and Braden Looper, and it was part of a leadership development program for the team.

Andrelton Simmons has opted out of the remainder of the season. He's a pending free agent.

I'm surprised more non-playoff players have not done that. If the season is almost over, your team is out of the playoffs, and you've made most your money. I expected a subset of players to take off early.

More so for pending free agents and more so that they the excuse of COVID to avoid any potential injuries in the last week.

Looking more and more like the two teams who provably were outside of their hotel, not following protocol, were the ones hit hardest with virus (Cardinals and Marlins). A few isolated incidents here and there (and some were false positives anyways), but it's safe to say the team didn't take it as seriously as other teams. It's really not hard to practice safe hygiene. We can have a society again if people wore masks, washed their hands often, quarantine when appropriate, etc.
