My first thought, seeing all the survivalist preppers with AR-15s trying to storm the Michigan state house was: Wait, shouldn't all these guys be happy? They've spent their lives and savings building bunkers and stocking them with urine recycling systems and Spam. A global pandemic is finally here! This is what they've been waiting for! They should be down there living it up while us suckers get sick and wait in line for toilet paper. The "stay at home" orders should be music to their ears! It's time to take to your bunker that you've spent your life and live savings stocking with Alex Jones' colloidal silver pills!

But they're mad. So mad. And protesting the "go to your bunker" orders. Why?

Because the center has held. Their dream was that everyone else would die, and only they would remain to take charge and take over. There wasn't supposed to be institutions and government and charitable works to help and protect one another. Society wassupposed to end, and they were supposed to emerge triumphant and, most importantly of all, the only ones left to take over power.

They're not mad about the pandemic, they're not really mad about sheltering orders. They're mad everyone else who they hate didn't die.

Here's an update from the CDC:
As states push ahead with reopening, CDC warns coronavirus cases and deaths are set to soar

As nearly half of U.S. states begin to ease restrictions that were put in place to slow the spread of the coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is quietly projecting a stark rise in the number of new cases of the virus and deaths from it over the next month.

Modeling from the CDC, incorporated into a chart prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and circulated within the administration, was obtained by the New York Times. It projects 200,000 new daily cases of the coronavirus by the end of May and 3,000 daily deaths in the U.S. At present, approximately 25,000 new cases are reported each day, with roughly 1,750 deaths.

I hope our over-achieving ways regress to the mean soon because we are so screwed if that model is anywhere accurate. Scratch that, it'll be a tragedy even if we meet that 50% projection, just less screwed.

I ordered some food from a BBQ/Bar nearby for dinner. Hung out on the deck and had a beer while waiting. They were open and "adhering to guidelines."

We're so [expletive].

25-40 people inside. 1 wearing a mask. No employees wearing one. People making it a [expletive] point to hug and shake hands. A guy running for Congress in the district was there drinking and handing out flyers talking about freedom. Unreal.

I'm just to the point where I'm rooting for the virus. If we are this stupid we deserve it. I don't know how many millions dead it will take to wake people up but I'm pretty confident my family will be safe since we are all staying the hell away from others.

Good god. This is why we have to be ordered to stay home.

I really recommend listening to Majority Report podcast back episodes for the COVID related interviews lately even if you're not a lefty.

I've heard some interesting facts on there from epidemiologists and David Wallace Wells, who's the reporter Felix posted above:

1. According to an epidemiologist interviewed last week, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th order transmissions of this are "air, air, air, and air". Assuming he put it that way for emphasis. So the number of cases where it's been transmitted by a droplet on a box or chair and then someone touching their face is not non-existent, but likely very small. Prolonged, face to face, indoor contact is the biggest potential for transmission. This is why meat packing plants have such a problem. Same for the choir practice that was in the news last month. I've heard moisture is also a contributing factor in meat packing environments.

I don't think I'd go in a restaurant like ICE describes above, and certainly wouldn't eat in there. If the waiter wore a mask and the tables were spaced far apart I might consider it, but my wife being immune compromised we won't be doing that for a long time.

2. When Wallace-Wells was on, he said from what he's been hearing after reporting on it for a few weeks, outdoor transmission is very unlikely. I would assume there are exceptions to that, but even a slight breeze would likely carry away any droplets almost instantly. So I would guess the spring breakers on the beach probably didn't spread it until they went to bars together and hung out in each other's hotel rooms. I'd think getting up in someone's face or strenuous exercising next to someone might be different.

3. An epidemiologist who was on a couple weeks ago was explaining masks - surgical masks are designed to keep a doctor's spit from getting into his operating field. So large droplets as they come out of the mouth. This is why everyone wearing masks is good since many will be asymptomatic and breathing it out. Once the droplets disperse in a closed environment, they break down into pieces as small as .03 microns. A human hair is .75 microns wide. The way he put it is that if you look at those masks under a microscope it's like using a chain link fence to hold back a flood. So those masks are nearly useless for keeping it out, which i think is known but I hadn't heard those numbers and that characterization.

I'll see if I can find and post the interviews.

Since you're a mod, maybe the following belongs in the other coronavirus thread (in which case, please move it), but I felt it was an appropriate follow-up to your post above:
The Coronavirus Becomes a Battle Cry for Extremists

America’s extremists are attempting to turn the coronavirus pandemic into a potent recruiting tool both in the deep corners of the internet and on the streets of state capitals by twisting the public health crisis to bolster their white supremacist, anti-government agenda.

Although the protests that have broken out across the country have drawn out a wide variety of people pressing to lift stay-at-home orders, the presence of extremists cannot be missed, with their anti-immigrant and anti-Semitic signs and coded messages aimed at inspiring the faithful, say those who track such movements.

One subculture known as “accelerationists” lives in constant expectation of a race war that will topple the federal government. The pandemic became the latest in a long line of possible igniters.

This may solve a lot of issues. More working from home, less commuting, travel, polluting. People out protesting are most likely to get sick and die. Fewer of them around to prevent the changes we need to survive as a species. Political parties crumble. Demographics shift lefter, younger, more intelligent. HCFA, GND, UI. What a wonderful world it could be.
