Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Mets offered free agent outfielder Jason Bay a four-year contract worth roughly $65 million.
Bay turned down a similar contract from the Red Sox before hitting free agency, so the Mets would likely need to kick in another year to get a deal done. Interestingly, Heyman writes that the Mets didn't want to get into "protracted talks" for Matt Holliday, who could make up to $100 million this winter. The Mets are confident that Bay's pull-hitting style will translate to Citi Field, so it looks like they've finally made their preference known. Stay tuned.

I agree, my only point is shamming owners is now Boras' best tactic, and it's worked in the past, so he's going to use it. I don't think DeWitt is going to fall for the pressure.

I'm with you. Current ownership has a pretty decent track record in getting deals done with this slimeball. Looks like DeWitt ignores the bluster and whining pretty well.

So, in simple terms, what do you do? Boras clearly isn't going to let Holliday sign a contract until the market is set by Bay (among others). So do you wait for Holliday, and risk missing out on Holliday and all of the other free agents, or do you start moving forward without Holliday.

IMO, it's a tough call for Mo, and I'm honestly not sure what my next move would be.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinals GM John Mozeliak met Thursday with Matt Holliday's agent, Scott Boras, but no offer was made.
"It was productive. We used our time well," Mozeliak said of the whole Winter Meetings experience. "We have a really good idea what the next step looks like." The Cardinals hope to come to a resolution with Holliday soon, one way or the other. They can't afford to wait around and let free agents sign elsewhere only to wind up Holliday-less and with many other holes come spring. The outfielder is thought to be seeking a contract well over $100M.

I'm still confused as to why Bay needs to sign first. Doesn't the top player usually sign first which sets the market for everyone else? Is it strictly because of the Boras factor?
