I actually supported trying to sign him at the beginning of spring training when he was still available and Boras was still demanding $10 million for a one year deal.actually always liked him, and in 2003 when the Cards were trying to trade for a starter to try and stay in the race, I really, really wanted them to get him (he went to the Yanks).
If I remember right, I was arguing that if his price fell all the way down to the $5-7 million range (basically, if Anaheim decided to pass on him... they were the only real suitors) then we should sign him.
At the time we didn't know what we had in Reyes and didn't know if Ponson would even be sober for ST.
I guess I got my wish, but at far less than the price I was willing to pay. Chalk another one up in the Walt Jocketty is smarter than me category.
