Cards get Jeff Weaver

actually always liked him, and in 2003 when the Cards were trying to trade for a starter to try and stay in the race, I really, really wanted them to get him (he went to the Yanks).

I actually supported trying to sign him at the beginning of spring training when he was still available and Boras was still demanding $10 million for a one year deal.

If I remember right, I was arguing that if his price fell all the way down to the $5-7 million range (basically, if Anaheim decided to pass on him... they were the only real suitors) then we should sign him.

At the time we didn't know what we had in Reyes and didn't know if Ponson would even be sober for ST.

I guess I got my wish, but at far less than the price I was willing to pay. Chalk another one up in the Walt Jocketty is smarter than me category.

Maybe he can put some pressure on Miles.

He can win a couple and lose a couple and
stay steady at it. He ain't the answer for the
Cards. He isn't any different from any of the
other guys from what I've seen. Hell, the
Angels were glad to get rid of him.

Is this end of the Cards search for a SP?

Has it now turned to trading our extra SP + prospect for quality LFer at the deadline?

I would imagine DeWitt telling Jocketty "OK, we'll pick up Weaver's tab, but that's it, no more SP, let's fill that hole in LF"

If I was a betting man, I'd say LF or middle relief if we acquire anyone at the deadline.
