All Good Things Must Come to an End (Aug 12th)

I saw the news that GRB was closing this morning, then I went out and did some errands. I realized I was feeling down, and then I connected the two. It seems odd to feel grief over the ending of a message board, but this has been the community I have been visiting for a decade almost every day (and many many times a day at work).

I found this site when I had moved out of the Midwest in 2006. I had posted at CardsTalk a bit before that, but this place was such a breath of fresh air. You didn't have to sort through all of the junk to get to the good stuff, as it was all good stuff, even on the side forums, where many things made me laugh out loud at work and caused co-worker's eyes to glance in my direction.

As many have said already, when baseball news was breaking, I came here first and usually found the same news and how it related to the Cardinals, often before I'd hear anything anywhere else on the Post site or on the radio. I loved following game threads and seeing the insights (and angst) of fellow fans as a game progressed. Playoff game threads were fantastic. The Game 6 thread from the 2011 World Series should be archived in the Cardinals Hall of Fame. We were blessed with a great decade of Cardinal baseball to share with each other while this board was in existence.

A while ago I was wondering what it would be like for a place like this to be around for decades and to be able to look back at how we were feeling in the middle of a championship run, as if someone could look back at some random season in the 50's or 70's or something (not just the good times) and see the ups and downs in our own words. I'm sad that it won't happen, but I understand all good things must end, even if this conclusion feels a bit abrupt. Ending this place after the Cardinals win the 2016 Series and on the day before election day would be just about perfect, I think. But alas, Michael has been steering the ship admirably for over a decade now, and I trust his judgement.

I think my favorite part about this thread is the lurkers coming forward to create accounts and voice their appreciation, as I often felt mostly like a lurker who would do most of my posting in game threads.

Thanks for providing this Micheal. When I started I was a freshly moved expat Cardinals fan living in Chicago. I needed something better than Cards Talk and you provided it.

I'll miss these people and the accumulated wisdom regarding baseball and so much more.

Thanks to Michael and the mods for putting up with me. I will miss it. So many really smart posters here. I learned a ton. Reddit and the other places can be OK but there was something special about this one. Hopefully the new Reddit one has a lot of the same spirit.

I want to echo what Donnie said about the lurkers. Nice to see that and glad you all chimed in.

I mentioned to Geddy over PM, but this gives me an excuse to stay off the internet. I'll miss it though. Learned a lot from you all - baseball,politics, movies, etc.

I may take the time to do a reverse festivus post in the next couple of days.
