If either Flaherty or Montgomery are willing to take a below market value extension, the Cards are going to jump on that. Just as I am sure they offered similar below market extensions in the off-season to both players. However neither player, nor their representation, seems to be anxious to jump on a below market deal (nor do I think they should be obligated to). Both are going to want to get the most that the market can get them, and I don't think the Cards will be offering that right now. If they are willing to pay top of market, then they can just trade them and sign them back.Spider John wrote: ↑July 27 23, 10:12 amMy head hurts. From John Denton at MLB.com
https://www.mlb.com/news/cardinals-poss ... moves-2023Flaherty, who pitched well over five innings on Wednesday in Arizona, might not be on his way out of town just yet. The Cardinals are still holding out hope that an 11th-hour long-term extension can be reached before Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the club's thinking.
Despite years of fan speculation that Flaherty, a Southern California native, would likely jump at the chance to leave St. Louis for the West Coast, the franchise is still of the belief that Flaherty covets the opportunity to pitch for the Cardinals. The two sides have made little progress toward an extension in recent days, but the Cardinals are expected to make one more contract extension run at Flaherty before the Deadline, a source confirmed. If that fails, the Cards will likely be forced to deal Flaherty.

Saw a thread on Twitter about the RedSox and the luxury tax and I had no idea about the increasing penalties for staying above it year after year.
We've never had that issue, so I've never even paid attention to it.

I can definitely see a scenario where we re-sign Flaherty and Hicks, only trade Montgomery, Stratton and DejongSpider John wrote: ↑July 27 23, 10:12 amMy head hurts. From John Denton at MLB.com

Big reason why the rumor is the Yankees won't add a big contract because they're trying to get under it.ghostrunner wrote: ↑July 27 23, 10:36 amSaw a thread on Twitter about the RedSox and the luxury tax and I had no idea about the increasing penalties for staying above it year after year.

Denton was on the radio this morning and said there's been zero progress on a Flaherty extension and that an offer hasn't been made (he did note that teams lie all the time too.)
He also said he thinks the Cardinals will offer Hicks and Flaherty last-minute extension offers using the deadline as pressure, but the likelihood of the offer being accepted decreases by the day.

Yeah, this is very confusing. There's a whole-ass GM sitting there if you want to give that up.MinorLeagueGuy wrote: ↑July 27 23, 9:31 amAre we to believe John doesnt have the sway to do this? He's the head of baseball operations. Does DeWallet have cart blanche when it comes to adding 100's of millions of dollars to payroll? Yes, there arent many owners who dont. But for John to be like 'my hands are tied' when it comes to some FO level hire that would relieve him of the burden of player acquisition, is flat out gaslighting [expletive]. Hire Girsch an assistant, if he is the "GM", so he can pass off the scouting etc. But none of us are even sure who does the picking and choosing, right? Moz has never come out, like he has with players/coaches, and said "so and so just isnt doing their job right now" in the FO. So he has never laid the blame for getting failed talent at Girsch's feet. Thus, we are left to believe that MG really doesnt do anything except wash Moz's balls. *John Mozeliak wants to step farther away from player acquisition. But the guy hired to do that, doesnt even get in the press as normal GM's do; all the press for this and that mention Mozeliak, and DeWitt. That's it.. Those are the guys.*Magneto2.0 wrote: ↑July 26 23, 7:54 pmReading D Goold chat. I found this piece interesting.

Mo is not getting fired, hard fact. But is it unreasonable to expect DeWitt to shuffle responsibilities within the FO? For instance, Mo shouldn't be allowed anywhere near free agency. He is awful at this part of his job, especially when it comes to deals beyond 2-years. Why can't DeWitt remove that from his purview, I wouldn't think the results dictate some change.

You actually are advocating for Mozeliak's idea. This is what he has suggested as something he'd like to see happen in the next few years.

Let Flaherty go. He's pitched in, what, 120 games in seven years and contributed 10 WAR. And the majority of that (8) comes from over four seasons ago. I don't have a problem with his politics, but he comes off as a doaf. I don't know if he can put it back together here.
Monty has roughly the same metrics as Flaherty except the majority of his value comes from the previous four years, all positive years. Meet him halfway. If he wants a big deal then let him test free agency. If he wants to risk becoming a pinecone again, let him.

Also the reason Mookie Betts is a Dodger.Magneto2.0 wrote: ↑July 27 23, 10:43 amBig reason why the rumor is the Yankees won't add a big contract because they're trying to get under it.ghostrunner wrote: ↑July 27 23, 10:36 amSaw a thread on Twitter about the RedSox and the luxury tax and I had no idea about the increasing penalties for staying above it year after year.
