The death of session bands is sad. The Funk Brothers (Motown), The Wrecking Crew (The Beach Boys and stuff) and The Swampers (Muscle Shoals)--these are guys that have Beatles-like hours together and spirit oozes out of the music they made together. There are documentaries on all three that are pretty interesting, if, in the case of Muscle Shoals, containing Bono for no reason.

OTOH, I'm not offended by Max Martin (but Bad Blood is beyond irritating, I hate that hook an awful lot), and wouldn't have taken the tone of The Atlantic writer here. Martin is making some great pop music, so is David Guetta from his laptop. I don't think it's a huge departure from handing a talented vocalist a lyric sheet and having them sing over one of these bands--though I definitely connect to that music on a deeper level and wish people were still making it with some of the voices we have right now.

My friend has 2 daughters, so he was playing it over the weekend. You're right, some of it is pretty great. The opening track, New York - very good. The last track is too.

Shake It Off is poopy no matter who plays it, though.

I have a 13 year old that plays 1989 a lot. It makes me want to take an ice pic to my eye.
