Just occurred to me that both Damon & Holliday are Boras clients; with them playing the same position, an interesting potential conflict of interest could be in play as far as signing wth the Yankees.
How do you think Damon is feeling? He want to return to the Yankees, but his agent's high-profile guy is competition for the same opening.

I am sure you have statistical evidence to back that claim up, and I don't. But, there's no way I'd rather see the Marlon Byrd/Kelly Johnson/Ben Sheets of the world for the next 8 years (even in years 6-8) than Matt Holliday.

Well you probably don't get Matt Holliday in years 6-8.

Wally Berger was out of baseball at 34.
Chick Hafey was done by 31 for the most part.
Magglio Ordonez was 35 this year and slugged .428.
Dave Parker was Ryan Ludwick after age 30, same with Mike Sweeney.
Hack Wilson.. done at 33.
Tim Salmon still hit but only played four full seasons.

then on the plus side you have Larry Walker, Fred Lynn, and so far Lance Berkman.

These are his top ten BRef comps. I'm not saying it means too much, I'm just saying that the marginal 1.8 wins might not be worth all that risk.

I think that signing Holliday would signify that ownership has decided to mortgage the latter parts of the coming decade in order to take advantage of prime years of the core the team currently has. Pujols is about to hit his 30s and players like Carpenter and Wainwright aren't getting any younger. If you're going to win with this core, it's going to be the next couple of seasons. If you're not going to try winning with this core, then why even bother retaining them?

I personally don't care if Holliday hits a wall at 35 and the team sucks for a few years down the road as the huge contracts given out to Pujols, Holliday, Wainwright (i'm assuming his third contract and being optimistic), etc. start to cost more than the player's value if that means having a nice run of playoff caliber baseball during what's left of Albert's prime.
