I think it's the stupidest so far, which is saying something (for me).
The kid's not a real prospect. This is an ugly mess, and the first thing that's made me question how much I'll really pay attention next year.
UK seems to think he would crack our top ten as is. I don't know *that* much about him, so I'll defer to his judgement (and the team's) for at least a year. How he performs in AA next year will be a fairly quick litmus test of his legitimacy as a prospect...so we won't have to wait long to find out.
I don't have a minor league database, but I'm sure the list of players who haven't played at all above A-ball before their age-25 seasons is pretty bleak.

I understand that guarantees nothing for future MLB contributions, but it does give you an idea of his relative worth within the system even taking his age into consideration.
What sort of "value" were you expecting in return? Or did you just expect us to keep him?
Freese might crack the 10 prospect list in the Pads system... but that's a BIG stretch. Top 20 is more like it. So we're basically looking at a salary dump. And that's fine - like I said, Jimmy carries a lot of sentimental value, but he just ain't worth that much. Of course, my big fear (and the way things have gone it may just be true) is that the Cards will kind of forget to do the whole dump part of the salary dump. We may just end up paying the majority of Jimmy's contract, things have gone that badly.
The question is... why would we need to dump salary for '08?

Relative worth within a crappy and shallow system means nothing to me. If this was the basis for trades, then we'd be making a ton of bad ones.

I expected other teams to value him at about his contract, which apparently the Padres do, and for him to be worth a lot more than that to the 2008 Cardinals.
