If we're going to have a jinx thread, I'll admit I was hoping the Cubs would win a few from the Phillies so the Cardinals get better "seeding" in the post-season tournament.
Having a worse record than the Phillies would put us against the Dodgers; having a better record than the Phillies would likely put us against San Francisco or Colorado.

This site says the magic number is reached when a tie is clinched. So if we were to use the mathematics in this site, the true magic number to play a post season series would be 43. 42 just guarantees us a 1-game playoff.

Personally, I would stick to 44. It's easier to track, and it will make this thread more fun to update after Cards wins and Cubs losses.

Sometimes superstitions are born out of practicality, like not telling someone good news before it really happened and then having to break the bad news to them when it falls through.
