That makes no sense. But I can understand thinking that trade protection *and* an opt-out clause is too much. I can also understand thinking that 8 years is too many.

That said, I'll be quite pleased if Holliday signs for $16M per year, even if the contract is for 8 years. Trade protection, fine. I'd really rather there not be an opt-out clause.

just warn him before he signs it that if he ever opts out he's not welcome back

I remember when he signed his last contract how he said he won't give the Cardinals a home town discount... I felt his deal was worth far less than what he could have gotten had he hit free agency. I think Albert says stuff to keep management in check, but he has a good agenda he follows.

That's just hit, he hadn't hit free agency. The Cardinals bought out 3 arbitration years, so what he got at that point in time was pretty damn good. Now in hindsight, it looks spectacular.

You could certainly make the case that eight years is too much. An opt-out clause with a no-trade clause is ridiculous. But the rest of what Neyer wrote was just incoherent nonsense.

Then he shouldn't demand an opt-out clause. My fear is that he has a great 2010 and then heads off to New York. If the opt-out clause can't be activated until after, say, the 2013 season, then I guess it doesn't really matter.

6-8 years, $16-$18M per year and trade protection ought to be enough.

No, but ARod's opt out clause was after year 6, I believe (2007; contract signed in '01)

I would guess (and this is just a guess) that on an 8 year deal the opt-out would be after year 5 or after year 6, most likely after year 6. Think about that... would the club really have a problem with Holliday at age 36 opting out of a contract that will be paying him (assuming it will escalate) $16-18 million per year over those final few years?

Mo's probably hoping and wishing and praying that he DOES opt out. I would be! That's significant money that could be reallocated to a player on the south side of his twighlight years right when the club will most likely have to be retooling.
