60 percent of the starting five had been in the rotation off and on since 2018. One can’t overstate how stuck in the mud the Cardinals were.Popeye_Card wrote: ↑July 31 23, 10:45 amThis season is at least opening up clear spots in the rotation and bullpen that need to be filled, without Mo just saying “well we already have too many pitchers for those spots, so we need to see what we have first”. We all had a pretty strong hunch as to what we had.

It feels like they were going to roll with the way things were until it was clear it would no longer work. You can't really hate the approach too much, since fans give grief when a team moves away from something they have had success with in the past.jagtrader wrote: ↑July 31 23, 11:00 am60 percent of the starting five had been in the rotation off and on since 2018. The part that continues to stand out to me in all of these articles is the assertion that "we looked into how pitch shape worked into missing bats. We studied how pitch to contact has been less effective without the shift. Prioritized pitchers who had swing-and-miss stuff etc."
This revolution on pitch shape, sweepers, release angle, "funky" relievers, deployment of starters, bullpen architecture etc. has been en vogue for at least five years now. Why are the Cardinals as an org. just now talking about these things?

They could be selling high on him since he's having his best season by a mile (save his rookie year when he made 10 starts), and also he's do for some regression (2.34 ERA with a 3.55 FIP, low K percentage too). But yeah, I would be surprised if he moved, since he's signed for 2 more years making nothing.Popeye_Card wrote: ↑July 31 23, 10:55 amCommenting on the actual trade here, TON would make a lot of sense for Cleveland who needs power as much as anything. Dead last in the AL in home runs. DeJong too. I’m surprised they would be shopping Civale, but they would probably give Cal Quantrill away with attaching a prospect.

I think it's simply that being obsessed with maximizing value meant playing to their strength of elite defense. That's no longer a strength thanks to the shift ban and roster construction and Mo said they'll have to prioritize swing and miss. I think he was just saying there's more that goes into that than looking at K/9. I didn't get the feeling that those analytics are new for them, just a different focus, which they've mentioned on several occasions. Basically explaining how a guy like Robberse can still fit the bill. That's how it came off to me anyway.phins wrote: ↑July 31 23, 11:41 amIt feels like they were going to roll with the way things were until it was clear it would no longer work. If you're going to roll with Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman every day, you better minimize their defensive chances.

Cause we no longer have an insanely good defense like we did 2 years ago, and the shift has been banned.phins wrote: ↑July 31 23, 11:41 amIt feels like they were going to roll with the way things were until it was clear it would no longer work. Just traded to the Rays for prospect Kyle Manzardo.Magneto2.0 wrote: ↑July 31 23, 11:42 amThey could be selling high on him since he's having his best season by a mile (save his rookie year when he made 10 starts), and also he's do for some regression (2.34 ERA with a 3.55 FIP, low K percentage too). That was fun, reading about those trades… … …
K Mo, I need more. MOAR TRADES!!1!
I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription, is more cowbell-used to alert me to moar cardinals trades.
POBOMO and the lost season. Waino, when his arm fell. Walker, his offense grounded, his defense lost. Pobomo and the blue jays, bowtieguy and the rangers, at the deadline.
Temba, his arms wide. Give me moar trades.

I wasn't interested in buying high on a guy that doesn't miss enough bats but if the Rays wanted him I just changed my mind.

And now we speculate why Goold was slipping this in only to have it be as if we were never in the conversation. Who on the Farm comps Manzardo? Im guessing we do not have a guy of his caliber not already on the MLB club.
