This season is at least opening up clear spots in the rotation and bullpen that need to be filled, without Mo just saying “well we already have too many pitchers for those spots, so we need to see what we have first”. We all had a pretty strong hunch as to what we had.

60 percent of the starting five had been in the rotation off and on since 2018. One can’t overstate how stuck in the mud the Cardinals were.

It feels like they were going to roll with the way things were until it was clear it would no longer work. You can't really hate the approach too much, since fans give grief when a team moves away from something they have had success with in the past.

The part that continues to stand out to me in all of these articles is the assertion that "we looked into how pitch shape worked into missing bats. We studied how pitch to contact has been less effective without the shift. Prioritized pitchers who had swing-and-miss stuff etc."

This revolution on pitch shape, sweepers, release angle, "funky" relievers, deployment of starters, bullpen architecture etc. has been en vogue for at least five years now. Why are the Cardinals as an org. just now talking about these things?

Cause we no longer have an insanely good defense like we did 2 years ago, and the shift has been banned.

If you're going to roll with Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman every day, you better minimize their defensive chances.

You can- and should have- been doing both.

I would think they would trade Flaherty.

After looking at SP FA market, part of me thinks its not the worst idea to extend Flaherty. If we lose out on Snell, Montgomery, and Nola, which past history indicates we will, Flaherty would have some of the highest potential on the FA market. Maybe we can add a Severino type and hope it works out. I really hate to gamble on the rotation again, but we're also much closer to Graceffo and Kloppenstein (or however you spell it) being able to contribute if a SP starts tanking. And Liberatore might turn some stuff around this season.

There's still a full day to go. I'd be shocked if he's done. I think Flaherty, Dejong are going for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if Carlson is gone too.

They don’t have to trade for next year’s starter now, but they don’t have to wait either. I kinda hope they get that piece that fits into 2024 tomorrow.
