This makes no sense as a trade deadline deal though. Anyone looking at Carlson is trading for his potential, not his present.

Carlson is a seller’s return, not a buyer’s add. Since the Cardinals are currently sellers dealing Carlson now makes little sense.

It’s roughly $10M a win on the free agent market. I’d say Flaherty is a decent bet for two wins and buys the Cardinals another year for their prospects.

We will see. Most likely we see a couple of moves right at the deadline as the Cardinals play the waiting game better than most.

I’m hopeful for a fun day. ProspectDom is like my favorite thing next to playoff baseball.

I thought with the off day there would be some moves. I am sure they are negotiating with teams and we will see some tomorrow. But now I'm bored.

This season will help the Cardinals in the big picture. The worst-case scenario was winning 80-85 games, spending assets to improve at the deadline and missing the playoffs. Losing in the first round wasn’t much better. They needed a reset.

A reset would be trading guys like Arenado and Goldschmidt for MLB players or like what the Red Sox did with the Dodgers when they traded Gonzalez and Beckett.

This is trimming roster fat for guys who likely wouldn’t be in STL in 2024.

I mean, this is what a reset looks like for a team like the Cardinals. They're not the Rays or A's. No need to trade Arenado or Goldschmidt really. The Cardinals can afford to keep these two stars and a few others and do a reset with the rest of the roster. The Mets are kind of in a similar situation to the Cardinals this year and I don't think anyone expects them to trade Alonso or Lindor right? And it's fine and probably the right decision. The big market teams like the Cubs and Astros who did do a complete teardown back in the day did that because they had no star players to build around, and had no easy way of getting them either. And as others have pointed out, tanking was a more viable strategy back then.

This season has now devolved to the point where we are discussing the meaning of the word reset.

Yeah, there really isn’t a reason to worry about draft picks under this setup. The Cardinals will probably end up picking like 7th and that will be a nice player, but probably a player who is a 50 FV like Roby.
