link to story and today's lineupJUPITER, Fla. — Shortstop David Eckstein felt a tug and while he tried to practice through it has been put on the shelf indefinitely with what manager Tony La Russa called a “feeling like he did” when slid into the home late last season. That feeling was a strained oblique.
Eckstein was scheduled to start today’s game against the Mets at Roger Dean Stadium, but La Russa said this morning that he learned last night Eckstein had “some soreness in his side.” Second baseman Adam Kennedy is already out with sore side, and La Russa expects him to return to the lineup next week.
Asked if Eckstein’s injury was similar to Kennedy’s, La Russa shook his head. Asked if he was alarmed by this injury because of Eckstein’s history.
“I think so,” the manager said.
There’s enough concern on La Russa’s part that this injury could be comparable to the oblique strain that caused Eckstein to miss time last season.
“It’s similar,” La Russa said. “He’s been feeling it and tried to practice through it.”
Eckstein’s absence gives the Cardinals scarce middle infielders in big-league camp. Aaron Miles is starting at shortstop today, and Jolbert Cabrera is getting a tryout as the backup shortstop. Prospect Brendan Ryan is also in camp, but that’s it. And if one of those three isn’t playing second base that leaves just today’s starter, Edgar Gonzalez, and Scott Spiezio.
“We’ve gotten thinner,” La Russa said.

Again?
Dammit David if you're not fully healed you shouldn't be wrestling. You need rest.

What did they call 'oblique strains' in the days before they starting using all this high-falutin' medical mumbo-jumbo?
Never heard tell o' Stan Musial or Ted Williams havin' one o' them 'strained oh-bleeks!' No sir!
Babe Ruth? He never had him a 'strained oh-bleek' or an 'anteerear crewshate'!
Nope! They just taped things up, went out there, and played real hard all the time for no money back in the depression when most folks didn't even have a pot to you-know-what in.
Uh...ain't I right on that honey?

Yes, that would be right.
I once heard a story about how Babe Ruth had a railroad spike drove through his right foot before a game against the Red Sox. Apparently they were trying to keep him from showing up and nailing him into the ground was the only effective way of doing so.
What did Ruth do? He pulled out the spike, rubbed some dirt on the gaping hole in his foot and sprinted to the game. He hit three home runs and walked twice in a Yankees win, and as he was walking into the clubhouse, a child stood on the steps, watching him go past. He asked, "do you want some of this whiskey, Mr. Ruth?" Ruth grabbed the whiskey, chugged it and tossed his bloody sock at the kid, thanking him for the first cold sip of whiskey after a hot day.
And that, kids, is how to be a man.
