Thoughts on Jay Randoloph

I listened to him yesterday and was not impressed at all. He couldn't pronounce hardly any of the names right.

John Franco-er I mean Julio Franco

Then speaking of Franco's age he said he was 46. Yep he even mentioned his birthday was in Aug. of 58 which would mean Julio is 48 going on 49. Then he had the brillant comment about as far as we can tell Julio is the oldest player in the Majors. YOU THINK

I couldn't hardly stand it. It was horrible.

I guess you don't like Shannon either. :P

Jay's a nice change of pace from the newer "ESPN" class of broadcasters. He's a throwback to the good ol' days if you ask me. Oh, and the fact that pronounced Deanne Lane's name as Diane only made me love him more.

It was the first time that I'd ever heard his voice, and I thought his voice itself was terrific for calling a game. Obviously the details, names, and fluidity and cadence of delivery weren't very good ("Paul De Luca", "EckSTEEN", etc). Maybe he'll get more up to speed?

I don't think it could be much worse than Hagen anyway, so hopefully with practice he'll get more up to speed.

I love him, but I have alot of sentiment involved with that. Brings back childhood memories of the Sunday afternoon road games, the only games they would televise.

Ah, cut the guy some slack. He hasn't been doing this in years. Players have their Spring Training, so do broadcasters! :cool:

Me too.... which is why it's sort of painful to watch/listen now. He's made a ton of errors in the two spring broadcasts. It's going to be tough to listen to this year if it's going to be like this. For instance, last week he was talking about the Braves and their 83 wins last year and the Cardinals' 78, which was good enough to win the division. Little stuff like that.

just turn off the sound and listen to Rooney and Shannon. I liked him. He has a good voice. But I miss Bob Carpenter. When I was in DC it was good to hear him calling some games. With FSN doing most of the games this year, you'll only hear Randoplh a few times.

Are you sure the Franco thing wasn't just a hyperbole of something?

I'll admit I've only heard him for about 2 innings, and that was yesterday when I was fooling around figuring out the mlb.tv interface. But just hearing his voice was like jumping into a time capsule for me. I didn't notice anything, he sounded very similiar to me, but then I wasn't paying that close attention. He sounded more like Jay Randolph of the 70's than Jack Buck did. That chain smoking definitely got to Jack's voice toward the end there.

I'm definitely going to cut him some slack. If you didn't grow up with him, you probably won't have the same feeling as if you did.
