The Mariners have the American League’s worst offense – 3.9 runs per game entering Sunday – and general manager Jack Zduriencik is looking for hitters who could fit into their lineup for the next two or three seasons, according to major-league sources.
With Ichiro Suzuki gone to New York, the Mariners can seek a power hitter to play right field for the first time in more than a decade. Seattle has the second-worst production in right field of any AL team.
Cleveland’s Shin-Soo Choo and Philadelphia’s Hunter Pence are two of the most desirable outfielders on the midseason market, but both are eligible for free agency after the 2013 season. So unless the Mariners believe they have a chance to win the division next year – a longshot, at this point – Choo and Pence would be unlikely fits for them.
So, sources say, the Mariners are more focused on the likes of Twins left fielder Josh Willingham (signed through 2014) and Cardinals first baseman/right fielder Allen Craig (under control through 2016). The Twins and Cardinals are known to want major-league pitching, which the Mariners possess. Craig’s playing time could decrease over the coming weeks, with Lance Berkman back from the disabled list.

That would have to be a completely straight up trade. And even then, I'm not sure I would want to give up Craig, who is making the league minimum, for a guy who is going to be making $20M in the next two years.

Man it would be hard to give up Craig. I would be more inclined to give up Adams and Miller and Cox for King Felix than for a packaged centered around Craig

I think you have to have more faith in Matt Adam than I do to trade away Craig.

I can't see a scenario in which we trade Craig. We need him now. Adams, sure. Give em Adams.

And if we want King Felix we'd have to give them Craig. Or really gut our farm system, because Hernandez is a freaking beast.
Actually the more I think about it I wonder if we should do anything more than get a RHRP or a RH CF. Last year proved that anything is possible but Cincinnati is starting to run away with the NL Central. If we can't run down Cincinnati, and the chances of that at this time are poor, we're left with one of Bud Selig's stupid coin flip wild cards. Which would mean that we could make a huge trade for a big star, lose one game, and have that big trade be for nothing.
