Tiger Woods RIP (as far as pro golf is concerned)

Tiger withdraws from the Masters 7 holes into the 3rd round with a +9. He did make the cut and tied Fred Couples and Gary Player for the most consecutive cuts made at that tournament.

So many great memories. His first Masters in 1997 where he simply overpowered both the course and the field then hugging his father off the 18th green. The 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach which he won by 15 freaking strokes. Two British Open Championships at St. Andrews, the home of golf. Holding all 4 major championships at the same time - an unprecedented feat. The chip in at 16 in the final round of the 2005 Masters. Winning the 2008 US Open on a broken leg. His last major at the 2019 Masters after coming back from fighting so many demons to hug his son off the 18th green in some kind of cosmic career bookend.

What a legend. He should have easily been GOAT but too many addictions betrayed him and, in the end, Jack Nicklaus still reigns supreme with the most major championships.

I'm sure we'll see him from time to time and maybe he'll play some on the Senior tour. But, oh my, what might have been.

His season is over (at least in terms of the masters)

Barring a miracle, his career is over.

Saw he wd from the masters. What happened? 47 years old with a lot of wear and tear on his body. Tough to see him winning any more majors but who knows.

Regardless of how many he ends up with, he certainly changed the sport and elevated it into the mainstream with his game and passion both of which were pretty much unmatched for a long time.

I watched his rounds online. He started out reasonably able to control his swing and have the ball do what he wanted. But he was noticably limping. Saturday in the cold and rain it was painful to watch. Obvious he was in a lot of pain.

Yes, he completely changed the sport and, though he doesn't talk about it at all, helped race relations in this country a lot IMO.

Hadn't thought about the race relations in a long while.

I worked at a country club full of mostly white upper middle class folks back in the late 90s/early 2000s and would agree that what Tiger did was so different that people had no choice but to respect, if not admire, the sheer domination. From the outside, Woods was simply better. More athletic, more driven, and at the same time, had a vastly superior touch and short game than anyone. He played with a controlled violence but played around the greens like a magician. No doubt many stererotypes were shattered watching what he did week in and week out on the course. The 97 masters when he went 40 front 9/30 back 9 and from that point forward obliterated the course as well as the field was one of those tournaments that just felt surreal the entire time. Like, how is this possible? He was so damn good they had to change the course for one man.

It was awful. He looked like his car wreck was only like a month ago. That man has got a long road ahead of him with pain management for the rest of his life.

I guess four years at his age as an athlete is a long time. He’s probably bone on bone in most joints at this point.

But the 19 Masters was so shocking that I wonder if it’s a good idea to eugoogilize.

Could be right. He's an extraordinary athlete. But this is the 2nd year in a row he was concentrating on only the majors. The Masters is the one with the longest lead time to get ready. Two years now he hasn't made it three rounds. His body just won't allow it. Maybe it will heal or in the near future they'll be able to fit him with a bionic limb that solves all the problems. So sad to see though. You look at Fred Couples who can make the cut at 63 and Mickelson finishing 2nd at 52 and that should be Tiger for the next 15 years. But I don't think so.

Hi gilgos. Would you mind if I replace the g’s in your name with d’s. It would be pretty hilarious, see.
