Burleson's fielding

Post by st.lewis11 »

I don't really know how to study fielding metrics, and don't really wish too. But I'd always been puzzled over "experts" and their metrics stating Burly was among the worst at 1B position. He seemed fine to me & my eye test, so I wasn't sure I could trust my own vision/judgement anymore. Well, there's an in-depth article on MLB.com this morning on this very subject. It turns out they say Burly is among the leaders in receiving/scooping throws.

Yeah, he looks at worst average there to me. He's not hurting anything by playing there.

Interesting. Fangraphs has Burly at -10.9 dWAR. Wonder if that gets re-appraised.

1B's are always penalized by dWAR, just because of the overall value of 1B defense being so low. Even a good fielding 1B like Goldschmidt is consistently negative every year, with several years in the negative double digits.

I think most sites that publish the existing stats would say they aren't entirely fair or complete for first basemen.

The bonus Q&A in one of the NL Central comments threads I posted today talked about a new defensive stat for 1B:
